the midday sun filtered through the clouds, casting golden rays on the picturesque streets of figure 8

currently the barlowe girl was at her dads house reading a book on the patio. she pulled her hair into a high bun as the sun blazed down on skin

after about an hour her phone buzzed with a text from sarah cameron

kie and i are heading out for coffee and to shop, join us?

azariah rarely ever turned down a chance to hang with the girls, even if the idea of shopping while lugging around her thoughts seemed daunting

she quickly grabbed her tote bag and replied saying she was on her way

azariah adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked toward the cafe where sarah and kiara waited. she lived for days like this quiet moments with friends that allowed her to forget the weight pressing on her chest

"finally!" sarah exclaimed as azariah approached their table outside the cafe. "i thought you bailed on us."

kiara rolled her eyes playfully. "she's here isn't she? relax sarah."

azariah laughed her curls bouncing as she took a seat. "sorry i got caught up. what'd i miss?"

the three girls went and ordered iced lattes and sat by the window

"so," sarah began leaning in, "any new summer drama we need to know about?"

azariah hesitated. she wasn't ready to share her diagnosis obviously, and she definitely wasn't talking about her secret with john b

even if pope and jj knew, all she did was give a shy smile. "you know me, boring as ever."

kiara scoffed and immediately called bullshit "right....the girl who's the lead in a ballet show and babysits for the cameron's is boring? sure."

sensing the barlowe's hesitation on this sarah leaned forward and gave her a comforting gaze "speaking of houses, how's babysitting wheezie? i saw her post some ridiculous video the other day."

"it's easy money," azariah said, keeping her tone light. "wheezie's so sweet, and you camerons are...complicated, but it works i guess."

sarah snorted at that rolling her eyes "oh my god tell me about it. rafe is always bringing his drug dealer around or high and it's too much." the cameron girl saw azariah nodded and laugh

after a minute of the two girls going on about how annoying rafe is, kiara changed the topic

she felt like she didn't know how her friend was going anymore. she felt distant

"what about your family az?" kie asked. "how's life in the outer banks with your mom and dad? pogue, kook, what are people calling you these days?"

azariah laughed and threw her head back "uhm niether, just azariah barlowe!" she laughed again shrugging her shoulders

the conversation shifted to light gossip and their summer plans for the rest of the season

sarah suggested hitting the boutique shops nearby. they wandered through the boutique shops that lined the figure 8 side of the island

in one store their laughter echoed out as sarah modeled oversized sunglasses and kie tried on a floppy sunhat

sarah held up a green pastel sundress to her friend, gasping with excitement "omg zariah, this is so you, you need to try it on."

the girl rolled her eyes playfully but obliged, stepping into the fitting room

she didn't want to change out of her clothes as it was so draining but the thought of her time running out crept in

how many more shopping trips like this do I have left

she tried it on, spinning in front of the mirror while sarah and kie cheered. for a moment, she felt normal

the hem of the dress swishing around her knees

"oh you're so buying it," kiara declared

azariah laughed but hesitated at the price tag. all her money she had was what she earned from babysitting to pay for her classes "maybe next time." she smiled

sarah grabbed the dress and marched to the register. "consider it a gift, no arguments."

the girl wanted to protest but stopped herself, her heart warming at the gesture. as they walked back to the parking lot, bags in hand, she couldn't help but feel grateful for moments like these

moments where she could pretend everything was normal and she wasn't dying
