the storm had turned into a hurricane and after a weeks days it had finally died down

but the effect of it still had the outer banks left in a rare stillness. the sky was filled with dark clouds still, and puddles from last night's downpour took over the streets

azariah walked up the cameron driveway, her boots splashing against the wet gravel. her fingernervously adjusted her green rain jacket and shifted the bag on her shoulder

it was filled with snacks she promised wheezie

wheezie had been eager to hang out ever since the storm passed. the youngest cameron texted the barlowe girl first thing that morning

she asked if she could come over; said that rose and ward were going to leave to check on the properties rose was planning to sell

azariah had no reason to say no. spending time with wheezie was easy, even fun. plus tannyhill was always a nice change from her mother's cozier but much simpler home

when she knocked wheezie opened the door almost immediately, dressed in her signature mismatched socks and a black glasses

she lept in for a hug from the teen "you made it!" wheezie said grinning

"of course! i'd never leave you to fend for yourself in this biggg, scary house."

she made a gesture with her hands and began tickling the young girl. wheezie laughed the usher azariah inside. "rose is still fussing over storm damage, but they're leaving soon. we're gonna have the place to ourselves for hours."

they made their way to the living room, where cushions and blankets were still sprawled from the storm

smells of damp wood lingered in the air, but the space still exuded its usual elegance

"want to help me clean this mess up?" wheezie asked flopping onto the couch

azariah raised an eyebrow. "help you? Looks like I'll be doing all the work." she laughed and pushed the girl playfully

wheezie grinned sheepishly. "i'm supervising."

with a smile, azariah grabbed a pile of blankets and began folding. the two of them worked together to clean everything up, chatting about wheezie's favorite youtubers to azariah's latest ballet rehearsal

an hour later wheezie went upstairs so azariah headed to the kitchen for water

she placed a glass under the faucet, but as she lifted it to her lips, a tremor shot through her hand

instantly the glass slipped and shattered on the tiled floor with a deafening crash

"damn it," azariah closed her eyes and muttered, crouching down to pick up the shards

her fingers trembled as she tried to gather the larger pieces, frustration bubbling in her chest

for some reason she just couldn't get her hands to cooperate with the rest of her body and she just couldn't relax
