The stadium buzzed with the echo of a thousand voices. It was the T20 World Cup, and Team India had been riding high on a wave of victories, largely thanks to Captain Sharma’s blistering form.
But it was not same with Virat, he was struggling. Match after match, he found himself back in the pavilion with a duck or a low score.
The constant criticism from fans and media gnawed at his confidence, and each failure felt like a personal defeat.
It was after match with England and Virat was out on very low score. He tried to keep a straight face but he knew he was breaking part by part.
In the evening after match, Virat sat alone in his hotel room, staring at the television without really watching it.
The highlights of the match played on the screen, and once again, it showcased Rohit’s brilliant innings.
But for Virat, it was a reminder of his own shortcomings.
The door opened, and Rohit walked in, fresh from a post-match meeting with the coaching staff.
He could sense the tension in the room immediately. “Hey” he said softly, walking over to Virat.
"Vi.. kya hua? Itna khoya hua kyu hai? Where are you zoned out"
Virat didn’t look up. "Nothing Ro.. I'm good. Sab theek hai"
Rohit sighed, sitting down beside him, "Dikh rha hai woh! Vi we need to talk about this. Why are you holding up everything alone? Talk with me"
Virat chuckled bitterly, “How do you think I’m holding up? I’m a walking disaster. I'm feeling like f*king failure”
Rohit knew this was coming, “You’re not a disaster, Virat. You’re just going through a rough patch. It happens to the best of us.”
Virat’s eyes flashed with frustration. “It’s easy for you to say. You’re scoring runs in every match. Not only you each one in the team is performing good except me! Meanwhile, I’m the one dragging the team down... Har baar out hoke wapas pavilion jaate hue kesi feeling aati hai tum nahi samjh sakte. Everyone is looking at me like I'm the problem!!”
"Vi calm down Jaan" Rohit reached out, trying to take Virat’s hand, but Virat pulled away, standing up abruptly. “Don’t,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “Just don’t.”
"You know what Rohit, I need my peace of mind. I'm going!!" He grabbed his car keys from the table and headed for the door. “I need to get out of here. Clear my head.”
Rohit’s heart skipped a beat. He knew Virat’s tendency to drive recklessly when he was angry, and the thought of him out on the road in this state was terrifying.
"Virat, wait, we'll talk about this don't go. Hum sort karte hai na" Rohit said, stepping in front of him.
"Ro side hoja, I'm not in mood to talk it's getting on my nerves" Virat said angrily.
"Okay.. don't talk with me but You can't go out like this. It's not safe." Rohit said trying to calm him down.
"Get out of my way, Rohit," Virat growled, trying to push past him.
"No," Rohit said firmly, grabbing Virat’s arm.
"I'm not letting you drive when you're like this.
But Virat was adamant he was not in the state to listen so Rohit hit the last straw. He took a deep breath and spoke,
"Fine.. you think you are in the bad form right now. So go in the nets and practice instead of going somewhere else"
"And why will I listen to you? You can't give me orders Rohit!" Virat said suddenly getting offended.
"It's captain's order Virat and you have to follow it!" Rohit said leaving no room for argument.
Virat froze, staring at Rohit with a mix of hurt and betrayal. "A captain's order? Are you mocking me now? Bossing me around because I'm a failure?"
Rohit’s expression softened, realizing the depth of Virat’s pain. "I'm not mocking you, Vi. I'm worried about you. You're not a failure, and I just want to keep you safe. Mne Aisa bola kyuki tum sunn he nahi rahe the. Aur koi option nahi tha mere pass"
Tears welled up in Vi's eyes. "I can't do this, Ro. I feel like I'm letting everyone down. Like I'm letting you down. I can't see myself in mirror I'm hate this feeling"
Rohit pulled Virat into a tight embrace, holding him close as Virat’s tears began to fall. "Shh.. You're not letting anyone down, especially not me. Itna sochna band kro Vi. We’re a team, and we’ll get through this together"
Virat buried his face in Rohit’s shoulder, his body shaking with sobs. "I don’t know how to fix this."
"We’ll figure it out," Rohit whispered, stroking Virat’s hair soothingly.
"One step at a time. You don’t have to carry this burden alone."
Rohit let Virat hug him till it's enough for Vi. He knew Virat needs this, They stood there for what felt like an eternity. When Virat finally pulled back, his eyes were red but he had calm down now.
"Thank you," Virat said softly, his voice trembling. "I don’t know what I’d do without you."
Rohit cupped Virat’s face in his hands, looking into his eyes with pure love. "You’ll never have to find out because I’m not going anywhere."
A small smile tugged at Virat’s lips.
"You always know how to make me feel better"Rohit chuckled, wiping away the last of Virat’s tears. "That’s because I love you, you idiot."
Virat laughed, this time genuinely not the one he was pretending these days "I love you too Ro."
Rohit leaned in and kissed him softly, their lips meeting, reassuring kiss. It was, a reminder that no matter how tough things got, they would face it together.
"Now how about we get some sleep? It's already very tiring for us." Rohit said and vi just nodded as he too was tired from his emotional breakdown.
Rohit took Vi in his arms, the steady rhythm of Rohit’s heartbeat lulling Virat into a peaceful sleep in no time.
Rohit chuckled looking at him, he didn't knew when he himself slept looking at Vi's cute face.
