Chapter 2 - Sneak Out

The sun shines through the window, forcing one to wake up. It was yet another day to start working.

As usual, Jinhsi was already in her office, doing her duty as the Magistrate.

The interior of the office was unlike any other. It was an open space without any windows. Behind Jinhsi was an illustration of their Sentinel, Jue. On the other hand, in front of her was a desk packed with papers. The only way in and out is through the straight hallway leading to her office.

There were elegant decorations in the room such as; flowery pots, flowers, boulders and so on.

Jinhsi craned her neck to see a person walking in the office and greeted him with a smile.

"You're such an early bird, Jinhsi." Rover complimented her for having no trouble waking up in the morning.

"It's the least I could do for the citizen of Jinzhou." Jinhsi replied with a smile. "So, what brought you here, Rover?"

"Nothing important. I was just wondering how you were doing."

Perhaps worried about her overexerting herself, Rover couldn't help to see how Jinhsi was doing. If he could, he would make her take a break.

Jinhsi was glad that someone was concerned for her. However, as the Magistrate, she had to push herself for the sake of Jinzhou's future.

"I'm doing fine, thank you." She said with a smile.

Baffled by her charming smile, Rover scratched his cheek and was about to go back. However, he stopped in his tracks and looked around the office.

"I don't see Sanhua today." He wondered.

"Sanhua? She went on a mission today."

"Mission, huh..." A smile formed on Rover's face.

"Say, Jinhsi..." Rover took a deep breath before continuing. "Let's sneak out."

"Pardon?" Jinhsi tilted her head in confusion.

This story takes place after Mt. Firmament. Take that in note.

It was lunch time, a perfect day for a picnic. The sun was hiding behind the clouds and the blue sky was hinting that it won't rain today.

The city was as lively as ever. The surrounding citizens turned their heads and greeted the Magistrate.

Today, Rover went out with Jinhsi to let her catch her breath. She had been overexerting herself as the Magistrate. So, Rover thought that it might be a good idea to let Jinhsi take a break and enjoy it. Jinhsi, however, was in doubt.

"R-Rover, we should go back. Sanhua might scold us..." Jinhsi muttered, tugging his black coat.

"She won't be back for a while." Rover confidently said as he walked with Jinhsi beside him.

Rover's reply didn't encourage Jinhsi to take a break. However, she followed him hesitantly. Somehow, part of her wanted to spend time with Rover, while part of her did not.

Jinhsi tugged Rover's coat and narrowed her eyes, gesturing him to go back. However, his attention was pointed at a food stall that gave out a sweet aroma. Seeing the food stall made him remember a certain topic Jinhsi talked about. Rover turned to Jinhsi and pointed at the food stall.

"Jinhsi, they're selling Loong Buns. Want some?"

As a result, the pair went and bought Loong Buns, which is Jinhsi's favorite. As they sit on a bench, Rover stares at Jinhsi beside him, who was munching on her food with a delighted look on her face. Just seeing her have fun was enough to fill Rover's hunger. Jinhsi noticed his stare and tilted her head.

"Do I have something on my face?"

"N-none at all!" Rover replied hesitantly and looked away, aware that his face was slightly flushed.

Confused, Jinhsi blinked her eye repeatedly and turned to the food in her hands. After a quick pause, Jinhsi sat closer to Rover and lent her Loong Buns to him.

"Here, have a bite."

"Hm...? I bought it for you, though?"

"I don't mind." Jinhsi said with a smile on her face.

Rover was taken aback after seeing her beautiful smile. They had only spent some time together, yet he felt very close to her. Somehow, he wanted to see her smile more often.

"T-then, I'll gladly accept." He hesitantly said.

In response, Jinhsi slowly brought the food closer to his mouth. She kept her free hand under the food in order to keep small fragments of it falling to his lap.

Rover hesitantly opened his mouth and took a bite. As he munched, his chest felt warm. Rover's lips curved up. He had never experienced this feeling until now.

"H-how does it taste?"

"It tastes good."

"I'm glad." Jinhsi said, giving Rover a reassuring smile.

Rover couldn't help but stare at her dazzling face. He may have forgotten his past, but he won't forget the present, especially the day he spent together with Jinhsi.
