Chapter 3 - Rumors

As usual, Jinhsi was in her office. However, the atmosphere was tenser than ever. In the middle of the room stood Rover, who had a confused look on his face. The room was filled with awkwardness. The two figures in front glared daggers at him. Breaking the ice, Rover began a conversation.

"S-so, why did you summon me, Jinhsi?" He asked with a wry smile.

"Sanhua, elaborate." Jinhsi replied, her eyes cast downwards and sweat formed on her forehead.

The woman beside the magistrate nodded and turned her attention to Rover, her red eyes narrowed.

"Since yesterday, there have been some rumors circulating around the city. It's gotten worse to the point that its citizens began to take it seriously."

"If you summoned me here... Does that mean that I'm involved...?" Rover gulped and recalled the events yesterday. His eyes suddenly widen, regretting the mistakes he had done yesterday. "Wait, you mean...?"

"According to the rumors, Jinzhou's magistrate— Jinhsi, is in a relationship with Rover, the Hero of Legends," Sanhua stated.

"... I should've brought Jinhsi to a picnic."

"P-picnic, you say..." Jinhsi muttered. Just the thought of relaxing under the shade of a tall tree, feeding each other, and being alone with Rover made her cheeks turn cherry red.

Rover, however, was staring at Jinhsi with an amused face. He realized how adorable Jinhsi was when she's flustered. However, he was not here to have fun. Instead, he was summoned to take care of the mess he had made last day. 

Attempting to make progress, Rover brought a hand to his chin and came up with an idea. "Then, how about we just ignore the rumors? I mean, rumors will eventually dissipate, so the correct method would be just to ignore it, right?"

"No, it's too risky. What if it didn't dissipate? The citizens would take it seriously and treat Rover as the magistrate's fiance?" Sanhua replied.

It was true that Rover's idea was risky. There was a bigger chance that the rumor would definitely grow and be treated as a fact. It was a huge problem to a maiden such as Jinhsi. And in order to prevent that from happening, Jinhsi spoke up.

"Personally, I agree with Rover's idea. Yes, it may be a little risky, but..."

"But?"

"If the rumors spread... Rover and I would be..." Jinhsi muttered, her voice getting weaker for every word.

Rover was left baffled by her response. His eyes widen and his head slowly reddened. Jinhsi slowly lifted her head, stared at Rover and blinked her eyes repeatedly.

"Did I say something wrong...?" 

"N-no, you didn't." Rover hesitantly replied before turning to the woman beside Sanhua, who cleared her throat and brought her hand to her chin. "Rover's idea is a big no. If we can't convince them , why don't we prove them that you and miss magistrate are not a couple?" 

"That's actually a good idea." Rover complimented.

If they can somehow prove that Jinhsi and Rover were not a couple, the rumor would eventually dissipate. However, the problem is, how will they prove that they aren't dating? The thought circulated in Jinhsi's mind and asked Sanhua.

"It's simple, all you have to do is put on a show." Sanhua answered.

"Put on a show...?" The pair asked at the same time and stared at each other in confusion.

And so, Rover and Jinhsi went on a mission to prevent the false rumor from spreading. Will they succeed, or will they fail?

Standing near the food stall was Jinhsi, impatiently tapping the ground with her feet, waiting for a certain person. She turned her head to the stall and narrowed her eyes when it caught someone walking towards her.

"What took you so long, Rover? It's been an hour."

"S-sorry. The waiting line was long, so it took me some time to get some Loong Buns."

"L-Loong Buns?" Jinhsi exclaimed, her blinking eyes locked on the plastic bag Rover was carrying.

"You like Loong Buns, don't you? I bought plenty of them." Rover stated as he took fluffy buns out of the bag and lent one to Jinhsi, who hesitantly took the food and thanked Rover.

Jinhsi gulped before taking a bite of her favorite food. "D-delicious... Is this a new flavor?" She beamed, her mouth curved upwards.

"Mhm. Sanhua recommended it to me." Rover nodded, proud of himself for successfully amusing Jinhsi. As Rover watch Jinhsi eat with pleasure, they unknowingly attracted a crowd. 

"Is that Miss Magistrate and Rover? Are they having a date?"

"Miss Magistrate! Is it true that you're dating Rover?"

Although she was overwhelmed, Jinhsi put on a wry smile on her face and answered their questions one by one.

"No. Rover and I are just friends. We aren't in a relationship."

"T-then, what was yesterday about?"

"Ah, that was..."

"I saw it, too! Miss Magistrate was walking around Jinzhou with Rover."

"R-Rover is an important guest of Jinzhou. I was simply giving him a tour around the city." Jinhsi stated, her face slightly flushed. 

She had stated a fact that the citizens couldn't argue against. It was a fact that they were having a tour around the city, so there were no lies in her words. However, one man stood firm and put a hand on his chin. He was wearing sunglasses and has white hair that reaches all the way to his shoulder. 

"Really? I saw The Magistrate feeding Rover, though?" The man asked, looking smug.

Jinhsi was taken aback by his word and turned her head over her shoulder and gave Rover a wry smile. She couldn't think of something to fight against the man's statement and gestured to Rover to help her. Therefore, he stood in front of Jinhsi and scratched his cheek followed up with a wry grin.

He then stared menacingly at the man and cursed him under his breath. However, he maintained his sanity and raised both his hands. "As you can see, I'm injured and is having a hard time touching objects." Rover replied with a grin.

Before taking action, Rover swiftly injured his hand using the blade of his sword without anyone noticing. However, it was bleeding so bad it couldn't have been since yesterday. "And the reason why it's currently bleeding is because I clenched my fist."
