It felt as though Kat's hand had a slight tremor- although that was impossible. Each of her fingers were wrapped around her phone, holding it with such intensity that she had the ability to break it into a thousand fragments. Against her will, she had been led to the waiting room, and promised to be updated if there was any news at all.

That led to the fierce grip on her phone, clutching it as though it might will some sort of news to come through. The words possible brain injury made Kat want to run out of that hospital and just keep running until her head was no longer pounding. Possible brain injury--?

They were waiting for the head CT to come back, and that was the last update that Kat had been able to receive, before being shepherded into the waiting room, and told to just wait for more news. She couldn't simply wait, though. Not when Andrew's entire life was hanging in the balance- it didn't feel right.

And the question was lingering at the back of her mind-- why was she so affected by that? Why did Andrew's potential fatal injury cause her stomach to twist into unbearable knots? Why did knowing that he was in such a critical condition make her want to die? There were so many questions, and Kat's head was a mess, just sorting through all of them.

Kat was standing up, as she was unable to allow herself to sit, not when Andrew was hanging in the balance. She couldn't just sit. Across the room, she caught a glimpse of Meredith Grey, figure covered by a huge coat. Meredith looked panicked, her eyes scanning around the room. Once she made direct eye contact with Kat, she started to purposefully approach her.

Shit. Why was Meredith Grey coming up to her with an expression like that?!

"Kat?" Meredith's voice was strangely soft, when she wasn't playing the role of abrasive general surgery legend. "I assume that you're waiting for news on Andrew Deluca, right?"

Kat nodded, nervously. If they were sending the Meredith Grey to talk to her, then it had to be severe. "I am," she confirmed.

Meredith's lips pursed, looking around the room with widened eyes. Was she looking for someone? Who? "So am I. Do you know anything?"

What--? Meredith Grey was waiting for news about Andrew's condition? Why--?

Kat was taken aback at that, although she quickly cleared her throat and tried not to let it show. "I-- no. No, I don't. I don't know much."

"Do you know where Dr Karev is?" she asked, leaning in even closer. Kat had never been that close to a surgical legend like Meredith Grey before, and under different circumstances, all of her synapses would have been misfiring. "Alex Karev. Have you seen him--?"

No. Kat hadn't seen him, but judging by Meredith Grey's urgent expression- it seemed as though he was involved in some way.

Kat shook her head instantly. "No, I haven't seen him. Why? You don't think--?"

"Bailey called the police," Meredith explained. The police--? "And Alex came in with Andrew. I'm just looking for him, because-- because they might want to talk to him."

Normally, Kat would never consider speaking out of turn to Meredith Grey, but something deep in her gut compelled her to take the damn chance. "Why would they want to talk to him--?"

Meredith's eyes widened. "He came in with Andrew. I assume that they would want a witness statement."

Kat's head shook all on its own, even surprising her with such a direct reaction. Something had taken over her, a desperate curiosity to find out what the fuck actually happened to Andrew to land him in a trauma room with a possible head injury. "Dr Grey?" she prompted, just as Meredith Grey was about to turn away. "Dr Karev was with Andrew when he was-- attacked, I'm guessing--?"
