The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the backyard. The pool party was in full swing, with people laughing, swimming, and enjoying the food and drinks. Despite the festive atmosphere, I couldn’t shake the tension that had settled in my chest.
I kept my distance from Robert as much as I could, but it was nearly impossible in such a small space. Every time our eyes met, my heart skipped a beat, and I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks. I knew I needed to keep things under control, but his presence was intoxicating.
I was standing by the pool, watching the kids play, when I felt a light touch on my shoulder. I turned to find Robert standing behind me, his expression unreadable.
“Can we talk?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
I glanced around, noticing that most people were occupied and wouldn’t notice us slipping away. I nodded, and he led me to a quieter corner of the yard, away from prying eyes.
We stood in silence for a moment, the only sound of the faint splashing of water and the murmur of conversations in the background. Robert took a deep breath, looking at me with an intensity that made my knees weak.
“Elena” he began, his voice low and earnest,
“I can’t keep pretending that everything is okay. I need to touch you feel you, Elena.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but he held up a hand to stop me.
“Let me finish,” he said. “I know it’s not fair to you or Emma, but I can’t deny my feelings anymore. I’ve tried to be strong, to do the right thing, but every time I see you, it’s like my heart breaks all over again.”
His words hung in the air, heavy with emotion. I could feel my resolve crumbling, my mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts and feelings. Before I could stop myself, I took a step closer to him, drawn by an invisible force.
“Robert, I…” I began, but the words died on my lips as he reached out and cupped my face in his hands.
“I know this is wrong,” he whispered, his breath warm against my skin. “But I can’t help it.”
Suddenly, before I could process what was happening, his lips were on mine. The world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of us, caught in a moment of pure, unadulterated passion.
His kiss was everything I had remembered and more—tender and desperate all at once, filled with a longing that mirrored my own. I melted into him, my hands finding their way to his shoulders as I kissed him back with equal fervor.
Time seemed to stand still as we lost ourselves in each other. All the doubts and fears that had plagued me vanished, replaced by the overwhelming sensation of being right where I belonged.
Even if it is a sin to be with him, I want him.
His hands roamed my body forcing me more to him squeezing me to him like he wanted to make us one.
But reality came crashing back all too quickly. The sound of someone calling my name jolted me back to my senses, and I pulled away from Robert, my heart pounding in my chest.
“Elena! There you are!” Emma’s voice cut through the haze, and I turned to see her approaching, a bright smile on her face.
Panic surged through me, and I quickly stepped away from Robert, trying to compose myself. “Hey, Emma,” I said, my voice trembling slightly. “Just needed some fresh air.”
She didn’t seem to notice anything amiss, thankfully.
“I was just about to start the hotdogs barbecue . Thought you might want to help out.”
I nodded, forcing a smile. “Of course. Let’s go.”
As we walked back to the main party area, I could feel Robert’s eyes on me, a silent promise hanging in the air between us. I knew this wasn’t over, and the thought both excited and terrified me.
The rest of the evening passed in a blur. I tried to focus on helping Emma with the barbecue and engaging in light conversation with the guests, but my mind kept drifting back to that kiss. It had felt so right, yet I knew it was a dangerous path to tread.
Emma may have seen us, but the heart got what he wanted not caring about the wrong or right things.
When the party finally wound down and the last of the guests had left, I found myself alone in the kitchen, cleaning up. The house was quiet, save for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of Emma and Robert talking in another room.
I leaned against the counter, closing my eyes and replaying the events of the evening in my mind. That kiss had changed everything, and I wasn’t sure what to do next.
Just then, I heard footsteps approaching. I turned to see Robert standing in the doorway, his expression a mix of determination and regret.
“Elena,” he said softly, stepping into the room. “We need to talk.”
I nodded, my heart aching with a mixture of longing and fear. “I know.”
As he came closer, I braced myself for whatever was about to come. The kiss had opened a door that I wasn’t sure I was ready to walk through, but I knew there was no turning back now.
I stood in the kitchen, my heart pounding in my chest as Robert closed the distance between us. The house was still, the silence almost oppressive. He leaned in, his breath warm against my ear as he whispered,
“Meet me at the beach in an hour.”
I shivered, his words sending a thrill through me. I nodded, unable to find my voice. He pulled back, kissing my forehead his eyes locked with mine for a brief moment before he turned and left the room.
I breathe deeply, what karma is hiding from me?
