Prompt: Mia and Charlotte's interactions after Mia finds Charlotte at the bar

2337 words

"You know, I don't leave until tomorrow. You're welcome to come back to mine tonight. If you want?"

"That would be nice."

"Two gin and tonics?" The waitress approached the table, forcing the two women to break their eye contact.

"Thank you," Mia said, smiling as the woman placed the drinks in front of them. As she walked off, she winked at Mia before looking her up and down and giving her a smirk.

Charlotte's face dropped once more.

Mia smirked at Charlotte's reaction and placed a hand on her knee. "Char, I promise you - I'm not interested in her. I am here for you - and you only."

This sentence made Charlotte's heart soar and she beamed. Mia gently squeezed Charlotte's knee before removing her hand.

Charlotte gingerly picked up her glass and took a small sip, her hand shaking. The wedding ring still sat on the table, and every time it caught Charlotte's eye, her stomach lurched.

Mia noticed this - I mean, she notices everything - and gave Charlotte a knowing look.

"Sweetheart, do you want me to move the ring? I can put it in my bag - completely out of sight and then you won't have to worry about seeing it."

Charlotte smiled and pushed the ring across the table to Mia, who dropped it into her bag.

"I do hope you know how proud I am of you, Char." Mia gave Charlotte a gentle smile, a smile that no one had ever seen before. Mia's real smile. "You have taken such a big step in your healing tonight - that takes guts. It's gonna be a bumpy ride, but I am with you every step of the way. I will be right beside you, holding your hand. Whether you need me out fighting with you, or waiting in your corner until you're done - I will be there. I hope you know that."

Charlotte beamed. She wasn't used to this kind of treatment. Her husband wasn't a bad guy by any stretch, but there weren't many declarations of love. Even their proposal 10 years ago was him just getting down on one knee in the kitchen and asking her to marry him. 26 year old Charlotte was ecstatic and cried (a lot). But 36 year old Charlotte (after experiencing this from Mia) secretly wanted a bit more than that now. And Mia was prepared to give it to her. Mia would give her the world if it meant making Charlotte happy.

The two women began talking. Now Charlotte had one drink in her, her confidence came back and, for the first time ever, she was able to flirt. They ordered more drinks, and chatted some more. Charlotte was desperate to know more about Mia's past with Roger, but didn't want to pry so instead, let it happen naturally. They were really getting to know each other. Mia found out that Charlotte's girls were called Emma and Ava and were 4 and 7 years old, and Charlotte found out that Mia used to have a German Shepherd when she was a child called Tilly. They were both enjoying getting to know each other but as more drinks arrived at the table, Mia was beginning to notice Charlotte getting drunker and drunker. As Charlotte lifted her arm to grab the attention of the waitress to order another drink, Mia stopped her causing Charlotte to huff.

"No, sweetheart, I've booked us a taxi. You're barely awake and I can barely understand you through all the slurring. Let's get you home." Mia said, checking her phone to see the taxi was outside.

"Home?" Charlotte slurred, her walking wobbly and unstable as Mia lifted her off of the chair and led her outside, "I thought we were-" She hiccuped, "Going back to yours."
