"Break up with Charlotte."

Mia let out an involuntary gasp at Roger's words. "What?!"

"I've tracked down my ex-wife and your father. I'm not lying to you anymore. I can tell you where they are - but only if you break up with Charlotte."

"What the fuck I-" Mia started before she was interrupted.

"Ah, ah, Amelia - watch your language." Mia seethed at his patronising tone - only Charlotte could call her Amelia.

"Don't you call me that name. I'm Mia to you." She stared at him as he stood his ground, occasionally looking her up and down. "Why do I have to break up with Char? I'm not your puppet anymore Roger - you've got someone else to do your dirty work now. Why are you so insistent on ruining my life?"

"Because I happen to know that your father would not approve of your relationship." Mia gasped once more as Roger continued, "You won't know this but your father is very homophobic. Imagine what he would think if his only daughter was a lesbian. There's no way he'd let you back into his life. He'd shun you out again - just like he did when you were sixteen."

"I-" Mia started before pausing to choke back a sob.

"Oh Mia, darling - I know. You love Charlotte - everyone in the bloody nursery seems to love that woman. But, it's time to let her go. Don't tell her about your dad, she'd only end up ruining it for you. She might be lovely but my God has she got a big mouth. What if she found him too and blabbed about you to him. You'd be back to square one, wouldn't you?"

Mia allowed the tears to roll down her cheeks before collecting herself and staring deep into Roger's eyes. "You promise you'll give me the info if I do this?"

"I promise, Mia. I happen to know she's on her lunch break now - why don't you go get it over with now and I can tell you where he is straight away."

Mia suddenly felt nauseous and had to lean on the wall to support herself, "Do it at work? Roger, that's cruel."

"I'm sorry, Mia, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. You've got to be cruel to be kind. Good luck, Amelia."

Mia straightened herself up and walked out the family room, her legs shaking. She knew the quickest route to the staff room but took the long way around to prolong it. As she walked, she prayed to God that Charlotte would be alone in there.

As she opened the door, she spotted the brunette sitting at a table enjoying her lunch. She was casually scrolling on her phone and had not noticed Mia walk in. Mia opened her mouth to speak but no words came out so she opted for wrapping her arms around Charlotte's shoulders. It might be the last time she ever got to touch her - so she savoured it.

"Who the hell- Mia!" Charlotte beamed, leaping out of her chair to throw the redhead into a hug. "What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be home right now!"

Mia pulled away from the hug, flashing Charlotte a small, sad smile. "Sit down, sweetheart. I need to talk to you."

Charlotte's grin dropped as she sat back down on her chair and Mia sat in the one next to her. "Wh-what? What is it? Is everything okay?" Charlotte babbled as she desperately tried to read Mia's facial expressions.

"Shhhh, stop talking sweetheart. Listen, I've - I've been doing a lot of thinking while I've been away," Mia started, the nauseating feeling entering her stomach once more as she saw the panic in her girlfriend's face, "And I'm really not sure if I'm ready for a relationship yet."
