Giyuu and Obanai sat next to each other on the crowded train, their bodies pressed close together. They had both managed to find seats during the evening rush hour, but the train was so packed that they were still crammed in with the other passengers. Giyuu's shoulder brushed against Obanai's as the train jolted, and he turned to apologize.
"I'm sorry," Giyuu said, "I didn't mean to-"
"No problem," Obanai interrupted, looking down at his phone as he spoke. His voice was low and smooth, like warm honey. "It's not like you did it on purpose."
"Oh, okay." Giyuu wasn't sure what else to say after that. He glanced out the window at the darkening sky and then back at Obanai's reflection in the glass.
"I'm getting off at this stop," Giyuu said quietly when he realized that they were only a few stations away from his destination.
"Hmm." Obanai nodded without looking up from his phone.
Giyuu stood up and moved toward the door of the train, but just as he was about to step off onto the platform someone pushed him from behind and he stumbled forward. He would have fallen if not for Obanai reaching out to steady him.
"Careful," Obanai said as he pulled Giyuu back onto the train. Their bodies collided for a moment before they separated again, but this time there was no one else between them.
"Thanks," Giyuu said as he adjusted his bag on his shoulder. He looked into Obanai's eyes for a moment before turning away shyly. The doors of the train closed and it started moving again just before Giyuu got off at his stop.
When Giyuu arrived home later that night he couldn't stop thinking about Obanai. There was something about the other man's calm and composed demeanor that drew him in. He wondered what it would be like to spend more time with Obanai, to get to know him better.
Giyuu had never really had a lot of friends. He was quiet and reserved by nature, and most people found him difficult to approach. But something about his chance encounter with Obanai on the train made Giyuu think that maybe they could be friends.
Giyuu hesitated for a moment before pulling out his phone and typing a message to Obanai.
- Hi, this is Giyuu from the train earlier. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime?
He hit send before he could second-guess himself, then set his phone down on the table and went into the kitchen to make himself some dinner.
When Giyuu returned a few minutes later he saw that he had received a reply from Obanai.
- Sure, that sounds good. When were you thinking?
Giyuu paused for a moment as he thought about how to respond.
- How about tomorrow evening? I know this great ramen place not too far from where we got off the train earlier.
Again, Giyuu sent the message without overthinking it too much. He wasn't used to being so direct with people, but something about Obanai made him feel comfortable enough to take chances like this.
A few moments later Giyuu's phone buzzed with another notification. It was a reply from Obanai.
- Sounds good. See you then.
The next evening Giyuu arrived at the ramen place a few minutes early and waited outside for Obanai. He felt nervous as he watched people coming and going from the restaurant across the street. What if they didn't have anything in common? What if they didn't know what to talk about?
