"Giyuu, are you listening?" Gyomei's deep voice echoed through the dense forest, his patience wearing thin.
"Yes, I am," Giyuu responded, not taking his eyes off the shimmering river in the distance. "I've never seen the water move like that."
Gyomei's heavy footsteps grew closer, his wooden sandals crackling the leaves underfoot. "It's the time of the season when the river dances with the wind," he said, placing a firm hand on Giyuu's shoulder. "But we can't get distracted. We're on a mission."
Giyuu nodded, his gaze shifting to Gyomei's uncovered eyes. "I know," he murmured, his voice carrying a hint of doubt.
"You're still new to this," Gyomei said, his tone softening. "But trust me, you'll get used to it." He turned away, his hand lingering on Giyuu's shoulder before falling to his side. "We must be vigilant. The whispers of the forest can hide many things."
The two continued walking, their breaths in sync as they moved through the foliage. Giyuu focused on the sound of the water, using it to drown out his fears. The mission was simple: find and eliminate the new demon threat that had been spotted near the village. But simple didn't mean easy, especially for a water hashira paired with a blind stone hashira.
As they approached the village, the air grew thick with tension. The villagers had retreated into their homes, the only signs of life the occasional rustling of the thatched roofs. Gyomei's steps grew lighter, his senses heightened despite his lack of sight. Giyuu could feel the power radiating from his senior, a reassuring presence in the face of the unknown."I can feel them," Gyomei murmured, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword. "They're close."
Giyuu's heart raced. His hand instinctively went to the handle of his own weapon, his grip tightening. He knew that Gyomei's senses were unparalleled, especially when it came to detecting demons. They were getting closer to the heart of the problem.
The sound of rushing water grew louder as they approached the river's edge. A sudden gust of wind sent a chill down Giyuu's spine, raising the hairs on his neck. He looked around, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.
"They're here," Gyomei announced, his voice a low growl.
Without warning, a demon sprang from the trees, its claws gleaming in the moonlight. Giyuu reacted instinctively, his sword slicing through the air. The demon's eyes widened in surprise before it dissolved into ash.
"Good," Gyomei said, his voice devoid of emotion. "But there are more."
They spread out, their movements fluid and precise. Giyuu's breaths grew quicker as the battle intensified. The sound of clashing steel and demonic screeches filled the night. He could feel the energy around him, the power of their combined abilities pushing back the darkness.
And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fighting stopped. The only sounds that remained were their heavy breaths and the rushing river.
"It's done," Gyomei said, his hand reaching out to find Giyuu. "You did well."
Giyuu sheathed his sword, his chest heaving. He felt a strange mix of relief and exhilaration. The village was safe, for now. But he knew that this was just the beginning of their journey together, and there would be many more battles to come.
The water hashira looked up at his blind mentor, his eyes shining with newfound respect. "Thank you," he said, his voice hoarse from the effort.
Gyomei offered a rare smile. "We make a good team," he said, patting Giyuu's shoulder. "Now, let's go home."
