𝑬ight months.

That's how long it had been since you and Hibaru Yotsurugi had officially started dating, and to Hibaru, it felt like no time at all. Despite his cool demeanor and confidence in most situations, today was different. Hibaru wanted to surprise you, and in his mind, there was one way to make this anniversary memorable: by baking a cake.

There was just one problem—Hibaru wasn't exactly the best cook. In fact, he was far from it.

You were out on patrol with your Astro, completely unaware of the baking disaster brewing back at Yotsurugi Headquarters. Hibaru figured this would be the perfect time to start. He had everything he needed—ingredients, recipe book, and a tiny bit of confidence.

The plan was simple: bake the perfect cake, surprise you, and celebrate your eight-month milestone together. Easy, right?

Well, Hibaru soon found out how wrong he was.

As he stepped into the spacious kitchen at headquarters, Hibaru tied an apron around his waist, determined to make this work. The recipe seemed easy enough: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and milk. He had all the ingredients laid out on the counter, and he started mixing the batter.

But things quickly started to go awry.

First, he poured too much milk, making the batter too thin.

"Tch, it's fine, I'll just add more flour," Hibaru muttered to himself, dumping more into the bowl.

However, instead of fixing the problem, it made the batter lumpy and thick. He grabbed the whisk and started beating it furiously, but the lumps remained stubborn.

Then came the butter. Hibaru knew it had to be soft, but he hadn't bothered to let it sit out long enough. When he tried to mix the solid butter into the already disastrous batter, the entire bowl jolted in his grip, sending flour puffing into the air and covering his face.

"C'mon..." he groaned, wiping his face with his sleeve, leaving a white streak behind.

But the worst was yet to come.

After wrestling with the batter and eventually pouring it into a pan, Hibaru threw it into the oven, setting a timer. Everything seemed under control again—until the oven started to smoke. The cake batter had overflowed, spilling inside the oven and burning into a crispy, black mess. The thick smoke set off the kitchen's alarm, a blaring screech that pierced through the room.

Hibaru, in a panic, threw open the oven door to let the smoke out, but in his haste, he knocked the whisk attachment of the electric mixer, sending it flying. The machine whirred to life, flinging cream all over the counter, the walls, and Hibaru himself.

He fell back, landing on his bum in the middle of a cloud of flour and cream. The kitchen was a disaster—no, it was a war zone.

Hibaru stared at the mess, his head falling into his flour-covered hands.

"Why did I think this was a good idea..."

Just then, the kitchen door creaked open.

"Hibaru? What the heck is going on in here?"
