Comeback To Me
Chapter Five:
Third Person's Pov...
Chaeryeong rushed outside, her heart pounded rapidly. Ryujin ran after her; she grabbed Chaeryeong's arm, pulling her back. "Chaeryeongie... please." She begged, backhugging the younger. Chaeryeong let her head drop as tears poured down her face. She waited so long for this moment.
"I love you, Ryujin, but I don't know if you love me as much as I love you. It hurts more to see you force yourself. If Chung-woo wasn't in the picture, you wouldn't love me back." Chaeryeong softly said before removing Ryujin's hands from her body.
"You're wrong. There is no 'if.' It's not if he wasn't born. If I never left, if I love you, there is no 'if' Chaeryeong! I won't disagree. Things would be different, but there is no if I love you. I do. I really do, Chaeryeong. I can't prove it anymore than I have! I stood up for our son. I sang with you our favorite song. I'm here to see him perform. I-"
"Shut up! It's not about Chung-woo!" Chaeryeong yelled, "It never was about him! Before Chung-woo. Before anyone. What have you done to show me? Prove it to me. You came here for him, and you stood up for him. I-"
"Chaeryeong. I did this for you. For us." Ryujin took a deep breath. "The one person who invades my thoughts is you. All day, all I could think about was you!"
"Could?" Chaeryeong frowned, looking at Ryujin; the latter stumbled back. She fiddled with her fingers. "Y-yeah, when I was in the US. It was a living hell for me..." Ryujin admitted.
"Chaeryeong, I wasn't completely drunk. I wasn't completely wasted... not like you were at least." Ryujin sighed, trying to swallow the knot in her throat. "I know." Chaeryeong replied, and she sat down on the cement, her back leaning against the wall."Chaeryeong-ah, it's dirty. Stand up." Ryujin stood next to her, trying to get her up. "Why did you leave the note? Why did y-you leave me?" Chaeryeong cried; her knees curled up to her chest. Silence had consumed the air. Ryujin hesitated to answer.
"If I hadn't, I wouldn't have left. I would have stayed here." She explained sitting down next to the younger. Chaeryeong had stopped sobbing after a while and simply sniffled once in a while.
They both sat in silence until loud sounds were heard from inside. "Isn't that Chung-woo's performance?" Ryujin asked, looking through the glass door. Chaeryeong nodded. "It's fine. He'll be fine.""No, he won't. The only people he's going to be looking for are his parents. That's us. I'm going to go support my son, even if we fight all the time. For Chung-woo, we have to act like his parents.
"When did you mature?" Chaeryeong remarked sarcastically. Ryujin rolled her eyes, and they both went back inside. Chung-woo seemed so nervous and clumsy. His eyes scanned the crowd every once in a while.
"You got this, Chung-woo!" Ryujin yelled from her seat, startling the quiet crowd. It wasn't some flashy performance. He was going to dance and sing a special song. Chaeryeong noticed how his eyes lit up seeing her and Ryujin. He seemed less tense.
Everyone cheered after his performance. Chaeryeong took matters into her own hands and dragged Ryujin by her arm. She stuffed Ryujin in a closet and locked the door.
"I don't want to fight anymore. I don't want to harm that child's smile anymore. He has gone through so much. I will protect him with my life-."
"Chaery! You're ranting. I know what he means to you. He's your son. I get it just as much as you do. I promise that you won't regret it if you give me this chance." Ryujin interrupted, holding Chaeryeong's hand in hers. Their eyes locked, and just for a split second, it felt like time had stopped. Even in that dark closet, they could feel each other's gaze. Their lips are slowly inching closer.
BANG!! BANG!!Chaeryeong headbutted Ryujin after being startled. Her heart was racing—from what? Fear? Shock? Pain? No, it was racing with love, just like Ryujin's was. Ryujin cleared her throat and opened the door. "We s-should go see w-what that was..." She mumbled loud enough for Chaeryeong to follow her lead.
As they inched closer to the auditorium, the banging sound got louder. It was just someone playing the drums. They both avoided eye contact; it was awkward and embarrassing.
Once the talent show ended, all the families grouped up. Chaeryeong waited for Chung-woo to come outside of the building, but he didn't. She started to worry about him. "I'll go inside. Wait here." Ryujin said, comforting Chaeryeong's worries.
As Ryujin walked through the halls, she heard small cries in one of the rooms. It was dark, and nobody seemed to be inside of it. She decided it was best to check it regardless. "Chung-woo, are you there?" She asked, turning on the lights. Indeed, he was. Chung-woo had balled himself into the corner of the room.
"Why are you crying, Chung-woo?" Ryujin quickly asked, taking his side and hugging him. "They said my show was the worst. Everyone kept laughing at me. AND YOU AND MOMMY MISSED THE ENTIRE PERFORMANCE. I got so nervous when I was dancing, and then you guys disappeared, and I made more mistakes. They all started laughing!" He sobbed on Ryujin's shoulder as she comforted him.
"I'm sorry, little man. Your mommy and I... we had something to do." Ryujin tried to explain, but Chung-woo started crying even harder. "Hey, it's not the end of the world." She reassured him, but he shook his head. "It is! I knew you wouldn't help! I WANT MOMMY NOW!" He yelled, and he started sobbing even louder.
Ryujin panicked; it's not like she was used to handling these types of situations. Yeah, Chung-woo was her child, but it's not like she raised him and learned what to do. "Hey... Chung-woo. Calm down. I have a really embarrassing story to tell you." Ryujin said, picking him up into her arms. His little arms wrapped around her neck, and his legs on her torso. "Hmm." He said his crying had lessened.
"One time. Just like you, I performed in front of an entire audience. I was so nervous; I had hardly eaten anything, and your mommy had to calm me down. She accidentally gave me a sleeping pill, so while we were performing, I started feeling very sleepy. AND THEN BAM!" Ryujin made the sound effect while tickling Chung-woo, making him giggle.
