"He's fine," the doctor said as he left the room, his voice barely breaking the tense silence. Yuna sat beside her father's bed, staring at him, her mind buzzing. The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound filling the sterile hospital room.
Her father, resting against the pillows, broke the silence first. "Your sister... she's a disappointment."
The words were cold and deliberate, slicing through Yuna's thoughts. Her body stiffened. She clenched her fists tightly, her knuckles white. For a moment, she didn't move, didn't speak. Then she slowly turned to him, her voice tight. "What did you just say?"
"You heard me," he replied flatly, not even bothering to meet her gaze.
Yuna rose to her feet, her body trembling—not from fear but from the years of anger and resentment that were boiling over. She was done being silent. "I know what you said," she spat.
Her father's eyes flashed with irritation as he straightened himself up slightly. "Yuna, watch your tone!" His voice cracked with the authority he once wielded so easily over her.
But Yuna didn't flinch. Not anymore. "Or what?" she shot back, her voice hard. "What are you going to do? Ground me? Shout at me until I feel small again? That doesn't work anymore. I'm not a kid you can push around."
The old man's face reddened, his jaw tight, but for the first time, his words faltered. He was used to control, and Yuna's defiance left him momentarily stunned.
Yuna took a step closer, her voice growing colder. "You can't threaten to leave me; you can't hit me; you can't take away anything I care about. You don't hold any power over me. And just so you know—we never cared about your money. Not after what you did to mom."
Her father's eyes flickered with something—maybe guilt, maybe fury—but he said nothing. His silence only fueled her.
"Yeah, that's right. You killed her. We would never touch your filthy money, not after what you put her through," Yuna's voice trembled, but this time with the weight of years of pain she had carried alone.
"Yah! Yuna, that's enough!" He barked, his voice cracking, desperate to regain control. He pointed a shaky finger at her, his hand trembling.
But Yuna wasn't backing down. "Or else what? You'll disown me? You'll try to ruin me like you did, mom?" She scoffed bitterly. "Go ahead. Do whatever you want to me, but leave Ryujin out of this. She's got a son, a family she hasn't even had a chance to be with because of you."
Her father's face twisted with confusion, but Yuna didn't give him time to respond. "Don't drag her down with you. Don't make that innocent boy suffer because of your spite."
She turned and stormed out, her father's voice failing behind her. The door slammed shut with a loud, echoing thud, the sound reverberating down the empty corridor.
Yuna pressed her back against the hallway wall, sucking in shaky breaths. Her hands were trembling as she rubbed her temples, trying to push away the surge of emotions. The adrenaline was fading, leaving her exhausted. She stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the second floor. The doors closed with a soft ding, and only then did she let the tears fall, silent but unstoppable.
By the time the elevator opened, she had forced herself to stop. She wiped her eyes quickly, regaining her composure before walking to her sister's room.
Outside, Chaeryeong was sitting alone in a chair, her posture tense, hands gripping the edge of the seat. Yuna glanced through the small window. Ryujin was asleep, her body fragile under the thin blankets. It was hard to believe her sister had once been so full of life.
Yuna sat down beside Chaeryeong."How is he?" Chaeryeong asked quietly.
Yuna let out a dry laugh, shaking her head. "Better than Ryujin, unfortunately. That bastard's tougher than any of us."
Chaeryeong didn't respond at first, her expression tight, as if bracing herself. "I'm leaving tomorrow," she finally said, her voice almost a whisper. "It's not safe for Chung-woo here anymore. You know Ryujin can't remember me or anything about us... That means we have no protection. Her father—he's capable of anything."
Yuna's shoulders slumped. She stared at the floor, unable to speak. The silence between them grew heavy, weighted with everything left unsaid.
Chaeryeong turned to her, her voice breaking the quiet. "Did he say anything else?"Yuna shook her head. "No. He didn't need to. That's what scares me the most." She paused, gathering her thoughts. "I told him... I told him he could kill me if it meant you and Chung-woo were safe."
"What?" Chaeryeong's voice rose sharply, her eyes widening in disbelief. She grabbed Yuna by the collar, shaking her. "Are you insane?! You think you can throw your life away like that?"
Yuna didn't fight back. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Chaeryeong's face twisted in anger and desperation. "He'll destroy us all, Yuna! You think sacrificing yourself is going to save us? What makes you think it'll stop with you?" She shook Yuna again, her words spilling out in panic.
Yuna finally pushed her away, her voice raw. "Yeah! Maybe I am crazy! Maybe it is stupid! But what else am I supposed to do? A little boy—an innocent child—is caught in the middle of this nightmare. I can't just stand by and do nothing!" Her voice cracked, tears spilling over again as she spoke. "Ryujin can't remember, but she still deserves a chance. Chung-woo deserves a mother. You're her family now, and she needs you."
Chaeryeong's grip loosened, her anger melting into something softer. She pulled Yuna into a tight embrace, her voice calmer now. "You have everything to lose, Yuna. You're a person. You're not disposable. We need you just as much as Ryujin does. We're going to make it through this, but we have to do it together."
Yuna let herself collapse into Chaeryeong's arms, sobbing softly, her body trembling with exhaustion.
A voice from behind them cut through the moment."Yuna? What's going on?"
Both women turned to see Ryujin standing in the doorway, her eyes full of confusion. "Why... why would you say something like that?" Her voice wavered as she stepped forward. "Why would you joke about me having a son?"
Yuna froze, her breath catching in her throat. She could barely bring herself to speak, her voice trembling. "Ryujin... I know this is hard to understand, but... you had a child. His name is Chung-woo. You don't remember him, but he's your son."
Ryujin's eyes filled with tears as she stared at Yuna, struggling to process the weight of the words. "So... I'll never remember them?" Her voice was barely a whisper.
Chaeryeong stepped forward, gently taking Ryujin's hand. "It's okay. Don't worry about that right now. All you need to focus on is taking care of yourself. You'll have time to figure the rest out later."
Ryujin stood there, her eyes lost and overwhelmed, as Yuna quietly broke down again, her sobs echoing through the hallway.
