The Fifth Day

This is the fifth day I've come to that spot on the beach and all I have to show for it is sand in my shoes and disappointment in my heart.

How stupid I would seem if the others knew why I keep returning. I won't come back. Today is the last time. I obviously scared him off.

I should put my efforts toward worrying about getting Zayn back. I sigh. Problems, problems.

"You and I," I start out slowly, my voice barely above a mumble. "We don't wanna be like them/ We can make it till the end/ Nothing can come between/ You and I/ Not even the Gods above can/Separate the two of us/No nothing can come between/ You and I/ Oh, you and I/ I figured it out/ Saw the mistakes of up and down/ Meet in the middle/ There's always room for common ground."

I stare at the fluctuating waves and sigh once more. I should go.

I start to walk away, when I hear a soft humming. I stop and turn my face slightly. It's our song. The one I was just singing...

I recognize that voice. I slowly start towards his boulder. He must be behind it. I place my hands upon it and arch my neck. I see him. He's sitting with his back against it.

Suddenly, his shoulders tense. He looks up. Our eyes meet.

He scrambles away.

"Wait!" I shout, reaching my hand out. He's heading toward the sea again, about to disappear. "Don't go! I didn't mean to startle you!" He slows his fleeing. "I... I've been waiting for you."

He stops. "....I know," he says, without turning around. "I've seen you."

"You can speak?" I start.

He faces me. "No shit."

I laugh nervously. "Sorry."

There's an awkward silence.

"Why are trying to find me?" He's clearly self-conscious about his naked form and me seeing it. He must feel so exposed.

"I..." I start. What should I tell him? I'm not even sure I know why I was searching for him. For proof I wasn't imagining things? "I'm not sure." I divert my eyes to the sand sheepishly.

"So leave."

I bite my lip, trying to find the words. "I won't tell anyone about you."

"Good." He raises his eyes to mine and looks away quickly.

"I'm Harry, by the way." I wait for a response, but it doesn't seem he'll answer.

"Niall." He looks at me again.

I can't help smile a little. The hope that has been wrung from my heart has been reabsorbed, rushing in all at once, giving me a warm, yet queasy feeling.

"You have an amazing voice," I continue.

He sits down, seemingly growing more comfortable. Why has he stayed? He could have left like he did before.

"You're not bad yourself, land boy."

I shrug. "I get paid for it."

He furrows his eyebrows. "So you're a bard?"

"Of sorts," I sit down across from him. "You?"

"I'd like to be, but my options are fairly limited."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, besides the fact that its impossible to sing underwater, I'm a sea prince. My career path stops at me running a kingdom."
