The coach blew her whistle, signaling the start of their practice match. Sevyn served first, her arm cocked back, the ball shot through the air, spinning in a perfect arc, and Dominique returned it with an equally impressive forehand.
The game began, each player pushing the other to their limits. Their shoes squeaked on the court as they darted back and forth, the sound punctuating the rhythm of their exchange.
Sevyn felt the familiar thrill of competition as they played, her heart racing with every volley.
Dominique's shots were unpredictable, a blend of power and finesse that kept Sevyn on her toes. The match was tight, each point a battle. The score was tied at 5-5 when Dominique made a sudden, daring move.
She dashed to the net, her racket poised for a volley. Sevyn's eyes widened, and she knew she had to make a split-second decision. She sprinted forward and at the last moment, she lunged, her racket connecting with the ball in a desperate attempt to return it.
The ball sailed over the net, dropping just inside the line. Dominique stared in disbelief as Sevyn pumped her fist in victory. The tension between them grew palpable until they both broke out in a smile before the next serve.
Dominique's serve was strong, sending the ball hurtling toward Sevyn with a ferocity that seemed to demand surrender. But Sevyn was not one to back down. She stepped into the ball, her feet firmly planted, and hit a powerful return that whizzed past Dominique.
The match continued, each player pushing the other to new heights of skill and endurance. The sound of the ball smacking against the rackets grew louder, echoing through the otherwise quiet morning. The air was charged with energy, a silent battle cry of athleticism.
The coach watched from the sidelines, her eyes darting back and forth, noting their strengths and weaknesses, preparing to offer advice at the perfect moment.
"Game, set, match Baker!" Coach Costella yelled.
Sevyn and Dominique walked toward the net shaking each other's hand before Sevyn said, "Girl you had me out there working."
"As I should," Dominique said as they walked over to the bench to watch the next set of singles play.
"Just be ready to teach my girls at Crenshaw again they loved meeting you," Sevyn said before taking a sip of water.
"They were amazing you did real good with them," Dominique told her just as Lila walked over.
"What are you two talking about?" Lila asked as she sat in between the two.
"Just how the girls at the Crenshaw Center love her," Sevyn said not missing the look Lila gave.
"Have you been to the center?" Dominique asked.
"Uh no I haven't," Lila said while rubbing the back of her neck.
"Damn," Dominique said before getting called by their coach.
