Becky Jones
Jared Nifemi Akinbade.
The boy that had made Becky stay up late many nights.
The boy that had made the sun rise in the morning.
The boy that she had made the dumbest choices for.
The boy she had been trying, with little success, to throw out of her mind...and heart.
Becky tried to ignore the dull ache in her chest by focusing on the organ chart on the teal wall behind the teacher's station.
A young lady, who looked about 24, walked into the lab wearing navy blue pants and a free coral top. She was holding a simple black purse with a long note protruding from it. The lady's wavy weave bounced with every movement she made. The lady greeted the lab manager with a smile and the women exchanged a few words before Mrs. Bunmi nodded and left the room.
Becky wondered if she was an office assistant. She did not recognize the lady. Did she come to let them know that their Anatomy teacher would not be available? Was she just here to drop the scheme of work and go?
Most senior teachers did that on the first week. Mrs. Adams, their Anatomy teacher, like all other senior staff, had the privilege of office assistants who saved them some of their duty.
Office assistants marked assignments, inputted grades, collected and returned scripts.
Mrs. Adams had never sent an assistant on the first day.
This lady dropped her bag on the teachers station and looked around the laboratory.
Loud whispers still floated around the room and no one acknowledged her presence.
Her eyes connected with Becky briefly and she smiled. Becky tried to return it.
The lady then glanced at her watch before looking to the door.
Becky glanced at the wall clock on the wall, high above the lady's head.
The time was 10:34
Becky noticed that the lady's watch didn't look expensive. A lot of office assistants at Herald High, she observed, loved to show off. It was too obvious.
Would this lady, who was obviously new, be inculcated into the faux flamboyance of her colleagues?
After a few more students stepped in, the lady checked her watch and smiled before looking up at the students before her.
She banged lightly on the station, attracting everyone's attention.
The whispers gradually seized.
"Alright, student. Good morning everyone." The lady said brightly with a curt smile.
"Good morning, ma'am." Becky chorused along with some students.
"I'm sure some of you are wondering who I am. My name is Miss Rebecca Collins and I'll be your new Anatomy of Living Things teacher"
This announcement raised a few murmurs from the students.
A girls whose outfit mirrored every other girl came in and made her way to the free stool to next to Becky.
