10:44 PMIn a small neighborhood nestled on the west side of Detroit, a storm raged with unrelenting fury. Rain lashed against windows, thunder boomed in the distance, and lightning illuminated the sky in brief, jagged flashes. The pattering of the rain against pavement and rooftops was the only sound that dared to penetrate the oppressive darkness of the night.
Inside one of the modest homes, warmth and silence cocooned the sleeping figure of a young woman. Her bedroom, softly lit by the glow of a streetlamp filtering through curtains, provided a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. The air was still, disturbed only by the rhythmic sound of her breathing and the occasional rustle of sheets as she shifted in her sleep. The digital clock on the nightstand next to her bed silently clicked over to read 10:45 PM.
Suddenly, the tranquility shattered. The woman's phone, a sleek rectangle on the nightstand beside her bed, erupted into a frantic cacophony of rings. With a groan, she stirred from her slumber, her brow furrowing in confusion.
Rolling onto her back, she blinked away the remnants of her dreams and groped blindly for her phone on the nightstand. Finally locating it, she squinted at the bright screen, the caller ID revealing the name "Ben C - Work."
"Hello?" Her voice was thick with sleep, punctuated by a yawn as she rubbed her eyes with the heel of her palm.
"Hey, kid," came the voice on the other end, belonging to Detective Ben Collins, her coworker. "We've got a homicide involving an android. I need you at the scene ASAP."
She sat up with a sigh, the drowsiness slightly dissipating as she processed what Ben had said. "Okay. Send me the address." She tried to shake off the fog of sleep that was still fighting to bring her back to bed.
"Already have. It's pretty messy, so just... prepare yourself," Ben warned.
She huffed.
"Got it. I'll be there as soon as I can. See you, Ben," she said before hanging up the phone.
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, rubbing her hands over her face one more time before lightly slapping her cheeks, trying to rid herself of sleepiness. She stood up and stretched before reaching over to switch on her bedside lamp, and it dimly illuminated the room.
With purposeful strides, she crossed the room to her closet. She hastily pulled on a button down dress-shirt and slacks, haphazardly tucking the shirt in; professionalism wasn't exactly on her mind.
Her golden retriever stirred from his spot on the floor, his tail wagging softly as he watched her movements with sleepy curiosity. A gray tabby cat remained curled up on the bed, undisturbed by the sudden activity.
The woman's steps were swift yet purposeful as she navigated through her house and made her way to the kitchen. It was a spacious area with stainless steel appliances gleaming faintly under the soft glow of the overhead lights.
She grabbed a granola bar from the pantry, hastily munching on it as she checked her phone for any updates from Ben. The message confirmed the address of the crime scene, urging her to hurry. Quickly stuffing the rest of the bar into her mouth, she slipped on her jacket and grabbed her keys from the hook by the door. The retriever followed closely at her heels, his tags jingling softly with each step.
She began to absentmindedly pace around her living room as she quickly booked a taxi, not wanting to take the risk on the road between the rain and her still being half-asleep. The dog continued to watch her as she paced before settling himself down on the floor with a huff.
Soon after, the taxi arrived, signified by a sharp ping sounding from the phone. She took a few steps towards her dog, squatting down to reach him.
"I'll be back later, buddy," she said softly, giving him a quick pat on the head before standing back up. She walked briskly to the front door, quickly throwing on her jacket before grabbing her keys and hurriedly throwing the door open and quickly locking it behind her.
