Everything is perfect. As if a magical spell had been sprinkled over the event and nothing was going wrong. If anything, the event felt flawless. The looks of surprise and awe when they were first spotted exiting the limo all the way to how Dan and Blair graciously stepped along the dance floor was going superbly. She could feel the envy and intrigue rolling off of people they danced by. People wanted to know more. People wanted to see more. They were being watched with bated breath and for any faint crumb.
Yet Blair ignored the masses. She focused instead on having the night of her dreams that she had always wished for when it came to her Cotillion. Her smile tonight was real.
So she paid little attention to anything but Dan as he swept her across the dance floor. Blair didn't know what it was but she was finding it effortless to concentrate on him.
Maybe because his eyes only seemed to be for her. No longer were they hesitant or shy. Weeks of practice paid off so they could do the moves blindfolded. Each other's touch is now familiar and welcomed. When his hand slides along her back as practised, it comes as an exhilarating comfort that warms her as a reminder of all those late nights, spinning around the room in each other's arms. If anything, their bodies knew each other now. She knew if she slipped, Dan's hold on her would become firm to guide her fluidity. Skill, comfort and muscle memory taking over.
Neither of them had anything to do but stare at one another and "not hold back" as their instructor had advised before ditching their lessons. While their classmates were working and dancing as a group, Blair and Dan were flowing as partners.
Watching Blair and Dan dance felt intimate as they glided as one and they quickly became the driving force on the dancefloor, causing whispers and excitement wherever they spun. Blair would be lying if she didn't admit that she was living for the uproar. The night was so alive and her chest as light as a dove.
"Would you agree there is always a belle of the ball?" Dan whispered into her ear and her chest gave an instinctual clench when his lips brushed the weight of her ear.
Blair hummed before dipping under his arm in the dance, "Someone is always bound to steal the show."
She wove past their classmates who all seemed to wash together before she was finally back in Dan's arms and back in their shiny bask.
Dan used this opportunity to lean in and say, "Then would you agree we are the most eye-catching here?"
"And what of it?" People would have to be blind to ignore the attention they were garnering. For who her date was or for how they danced. It didn't matter. Her eyes didn't need to leave his gaze to know they were stealing the show.
"I guess I'm just boasting that I'm no Duke but I sure complete the ensemble just as well," he smirked. "Or better."
Her twinkling laugh filled the room to anyone close enough to hear them, though she had attempted to hold in her mirth.
.
"He just told her what he's going to do to her later..." Chuck muttered in the distance.
.
"Penelope bumped into Kati, trying to watch us."
Blair hid a giggle into his collar and swore she felt Dan's lips against her hair. The strands he kissed tickled in his absence as soon as he pulled away.
More like whisked away.
"That's my girlfriend!" was the only warning Blair received before Dan was yanked from her embrace to a furious, red faced Nate.
