3rd Person Pov
"How much do you believe in the supernatural, Ayanokoji-kun?"
Kiyotaka stopped reading his book and gazed at his friend, who suddenly posed this question.
"As much as I believe a person who wants to be friends with everyone for no logical reason," he replied.
Hiyori stared at him for a few seconds before looking back to her book.
"I see. That's natural, I suppose."
"What brought this on so suddenly?"
Kiyotaka couldn’t help but ask his book buddy. It was a weekend, and they have been here in the library for the past two hours, silently reading books and enjoying each other's company as promised. Hiyori's abrupt inquiry about the supernatural picked his curiosity too.
Hiyori looked thoughtful.
"Ayanokoji-kun, have you heard about the Urban Legends?"
According to his knowledge, an urban legend is a widely circulated but false or exaggerated story, often involving elements of humor, horror, or moral lessons. These tales are typically presented as true and may involve contemporary settings or recognizable characters, contributing to their believability and spread.
"I have."
"Well, you see...I used to be very thrilled of such stories since childhood. They always held a mysterious and adventurous vibe to it."
Kiyotaka listened carefully before nodding his head.
"You are right. I suppose you gradually grew out of it after learning they weren’t real."
Hiyori stayed silent as she blankly stared at the book on her hand. Kiyotaka wondered what was going on in her head.
Kiyotaka decided to continue the conversation with this topic.
"If you don't mind me asking, among the urban legends, what were your favorite ones?"
Hiyori snapped out of it.
"Oh, I don't mind at all. Well, if you ask me so suddenly... it is a bit embarrassing, he he."
"You don't have to-"
"No, it's fine. I think it is an interesting topic to talk about."
Hiyori had a small smile on her face as she cutely hummed while leaning on the table. The evening glow was giving the almost empty library a different outlook.
"If I had start with one, it has to be about, 'The man in the elevator'."
Kiyotaka tilted his head, waiting for her to continue.
The story varies a lot but it commonly goes like this:
This urban legend is about a woman working late in an office building. As she takes the elevator to the parking garage, a man enters before the doors close. She feels uneasy but dismisses her fear. The man presses a button for a higher floor. As the elevator moves, he ominously tells her, "You made a mistake." He then reveals he is a ghost or a killer, and she is his next victim. The story typically ends with the woman either being found dead in the elevator or disappearing without a trace.
"Well, that's about the gist of it," Hiyori explained.
"Isn't he just a serial killer then? I'm not sure how it is an urban legend," Kiyotaka expressed his doubts about the story.
"It probably is, but somehow it became a folklore."
In this day and age, Kiyotaka found it hard to believe how someone could commit a murder so blatantly and get away with it. Unless, they were actually some kind of ghost themselves.
