Jayson's POV

"You can do this, just concentrate." I told myself for the hundredth time this morning.

Taking a deep breath, I looked back at an old book about Phoenix mythology.

I recently just learnt a new trick, a trick that I was yet to master.

If I'm able to get this once, it would be a bee's knees... what ever that means... but, me being me can't even concentrate for a dang minute.

I spun around in my... what ever is the name of those chairs that has wheels and spins around... before stopping facing my desk.

Hey, don't look at me like that, not because I read books doesn't mean I know the names of every animate and inanimate things in the world, okay?!!

I slapped my hand against my forehead, the sting of frustration sparking a burst of citrusy scent from the essential oil diffuser on my desk.

"Focus, Jayson!" I muttered placing both my hands together in front of my face with my thumbs beneath my chin, my eyes drifting back to the worn leather book lying open before me.

The yellowed pages, filled with intricate illustrations of phoenixes, seemed to be mocking me, their secrets hidden behind a veil of concentration I couldn't quite grasp.

Stupid book! Now it's making me talk like a fridging robot!! Argh!!

Taking in another deep breath, I slowly traced the embossed cover with my fingers, feeling the raised patterns of flames and wings.

Leaning my arms on the cool wood, I pushed the book away, creating a small gap between I and it.

It's just you and me book.

My hands settled parallel to each other, fingers splayed wide, as I attempted to calm my racing thoughts, I hunched over my desk, my eyes fixated on my spread out fingers.

I was determined to master this trick, even if it's the last thing I do...

Wait, what?

'Just get this over with, Moron' Parker groaned.

'Well, won't you win the best motivational speaker of all time' I rolled my eyes before blocking him out.

Bringing my attention back on what I was doing, I focused intensely on my the space in between my splayed hands, following the illustrations from the book. Soon, my fingers slowly began to curve and soon it twitched to my horror as I concentrated.

A little flame sparked to life in the space between my hands making my heart skip with joy.

"Oh, hey Jay!!" Connor barged in poking his head into my room, making me lose both my concentration and my temper.

I took a sharp breath in while balling my hands into a tight deadly fist as I slowly counted backwards, letting out a short breath every step of the way.

"Oops" he inhaled, like I wasn't the one who just got DISTRACTED!!

I snapped my head towards him, jumping to my feet in fury.

I could feel the fire in me rising, when suddenly, I noticed a steaming mug of hot cocoa his hand.

"Whose is this?" I questioned in curiosity, my anger forgotten at the sight of the creamy, chocolate goodness.

"If I say it's yours will you not kill me?"

I glared at him, but my resolve weakened, "Sure" I huffed and he grinned.
