Brooke had never been a good liar. It
was one thing she could never do. Because it physically pained her chest to lie to the people she loves, her mother once told her that's why she would make such a good queen. The aching pain in her chest only seemed to increase as she watched her fiancé's face transformation into one of confusion.
When Brooke was younger, she used to imagine herself ruling the kingdom on her own by herself because she believed no one else would be able to understand her vision.
Of course, Mal saw it.
But Evie, she was the one to push Brooke further, to be the voice that guided her. Be the person to help her stand beside her when the whole council that was against her.
Evie was the woman who made her voice heard, loud and clear.
Brooke ran a hand down her face, looking at the floor kicking a stone. "Evie.."
"Look at me." Evie demanded. "Look me in the eyes, Brooklyn." Evie's heart beat so fast, as she thought about the news that was going to come from her Fiancé's mouth.
Mal took a step forward, seeing as this was her fault. She had got them in this mess. "Evie, I was going to tell you I was." She was supposed to tell her this morning, but someone decided to turn her into an old lady. "It's my fault it's got nothing to do with Brooke."
"What?" Evie questioned softly.
Brooke walked forward so she was the ahead of everyone with Mal beside her. The two of them stood a good few steps before everyone. Mal held the ember in her hand, tossing it with nerves.
"I lied to you." Mal started as she looked at everyone, but her eyes were mainly on Evie's. "We're not sure yet. But we don't know if we can keep opening the barrier."
Jay was the one to break the awkward silence. "What do you mean?"
Mal bit her lip, trying to think of a way to explain it. But Brooke took a step forward, raising her hand slightly.
Brooke kept her eyes on Evie's brown ones. "Ever since the Hades incident, the council, fairy Godmother, my father, want to shut down the barrier. Close down the program." Brooke explained. She thought that honesty was the best here. "The barrier will be closed for good ."
"To protect Auradon."
Brooke could see in the corner of her eyes that Harry wasn't happy, but she kept her eyes on Evie. The blue haired girl couldn't even look at her letting out a scoff.
Uma walked over to them. "So hold up." She rolled her tongue over her lips. "So we're saving you precious people. And your behinds for a lie." Uma stared at Mal, her face soft, she looked hurt, betrayed. "I knew it was a mistake to trust you. You're always out for yourself." She told Mal.
