Remus POV
Remus was slightly deflated from his conversation with y/n.
You see, Remus had had the biggest crush on y/n since his third year, her second. He met her on the train when Sirius was giving Regulus a talk. Remus isn't quite sure what the conversation was even about, only that there was lots of yelling before Sirius dragged him out of there. Remus was too busy staring at the girl in front of him.
He remembers it vividly. She was sitting on the train seat, curled up near the window. She had been reading a book about apparition quietly before looking up at Regulus and Sirius with her eyes wide. She didn't say anything until Sirius was dragging him away and even then she only said two words.
"Nice book,"
Remus had completely forgotten what book he was even holding. It was a muggle book called "Alice in Wonderland". He was surprised that she had even read it. He thought that pure blood families hated muggles.
Remus had fallen slightly in love with her that day and ever since, she had been in almost every one of his classes, leading him to watch her every day and fall more and more in love. He had tried to make conversation with her on many different occasions, not around his friends obviously, but she was always being practically guarded by Regulus, Caius, Evan or her brother. He could never tell his friends, Sirius especially. If he did, he would get torn apart by them. They would tell him how stupid he was being, or how he was just confused. Or they would mess everything up for him.
They would always try and set him up with random girls at Hogwarts, never a Slytherin. Remus would go on one date with the girls but they always seemed to like Sirius or James better than him. Not that he minded. His focus was completely on y/n.
When he saw her leaning against the wall, he had to stop for a second. She was the most gorgeous girl he'd ever seen and seeing her in that dress made him want to get on one knee and ask her to marry him immediately. But instead he decided to start a casual conversation.
Needless to say it didn't go the way he wanted it too. But that was irrelevant. His plan for the night was to get wasted and have fun with his friends.
But fate had different plans.
After an hour into the ball, Sirius and James had both found two girls who had fallen deeply in love with them after two seconds of eye contact, not that Remus can judge. He and Peter were standing in the corner with glasses of whatever champagne was handed to them. This was not at all the night Remus wanted.
"Hey Peter, I'm gonna go get something to drink," Remus told his friend.
Peter just nodded as Remus walked away. He felt bad for leaving him there but he needed to get away. He walked over to the bar, ignoring the groping couples around him pretending to 'dance' which was just an excuse to grind on each other.
"Hey, uh, one glass of firewhisky, please," Remus told the house elf tending the bar.
"Pretty strong drink for this early into the night," a voice said from a few seats down.
"Yeah, well, looks like you have the same drink," Remus chuckled, motioning to the girl's drink.
(Just so you all know, y/n is the girl but since it is in Remus's perspective and neither of them know who the other is, I'm going to be referring to her as 'the girl')
Remus slid down in the seat next to the girl. She was beautiful, there was something so familiar about her. She was wearing a black strapless dress with a black and gold mask. She turned her body in the chair to face Remus and leaned slightly against the bar. Remus thought she looked like a painting.
"Not the first of the night," she giggled.
"This probably won't be my last," Remus grabbed his glass from the elf.
"Where are your friends?" She asked.
"Hm?" Remus took a sip of the fiery liquid.
"I saw you with your friends earlier. Why are you alone?"
"You saw me earlier?" He smirked.
"Couldn't keep my eyes off of you," she teased. "Seriously though, why'd you ditch them?"
"Didn't really feel like babysitting them," he shrugged, taking another sip. "Who were you here with?"
"My brother and his friends. Didn't feel like babysitting them either," she smiled at him.
"Well, wanna go dance?" Remus gestured to the dance floor.
"You mean grind on each other like those people? No thanks," the girl took another sip of her drink. "That's not even real dancing,"
"You don't think I can actually dance?" Remus joked. "I'll show you real dancing,"
Remus downed the rest of his drink, his brain feeling slightly fuzzy, and grabbed the girl's hand. He pulled her out of her seat and led her to the dance floor. He placed one hand on her waist and the other in her own hand.
The girl seemed tense at first but as Remus danced her around the room, weaving in between the other couples on the floor, but once he spun her around for the third time, she was grinning ear to ear.
"I take back my words, you are a fantastic dancer," she said.
Remus twirled her around and dipped her down.
"Glad to earn that title," he smiled.
"Well, while we're dancing, let's play a game," she suggested as they spun through the crowd.
"What kind of game?" Remus asked.
"Have you heard of twenty questions?"
"Is that your first question, dove?" He joked.
The girl grinned at him, a light blush across her face, knowing that he knew the game. Remus twirled her away from him before bringing her back, holding her slightly closer than before.
"Alright, you go first," Remus said.
"Well, where did you learn to dance like this?" She asked.
"My grandmother," Remus responded. "We use to dance in the kitchen together,"
"Aww, that's so sweet," the girl grinned at him. "Did she raise you?"
"Only one question at the time," Remus joked.
"Alright, fine," she rolled her eyes. "You're turn,"
Remus accidentally stepped on the girl's foot which he quickly apologized for.
"I'm sorry," he said. "Guess I'm not as good of a dancer as I said,"
"It's alright," the girl grinned. "I know you've been ignoring how many times I've stepped on you with my heels,"
"I really am sorry," he laughed.
"Stop apologizing," she laughed. "It's fine. Now ask your question,"
"Are you still in school?" He asked. "Hogwarts to be specific,"
"Yeah? Kinda an odd question to ask," she laughed.
"Well I am too, but it's gonna direct some of my other questions," he smiled.
"So, did your grandmother raise you?" She asked.
"Back to that question? Yeah, she did. Never knew my parents, she's the only family I've got," he said. "What about you? What's your family like?"
"Well, it's just my parents and my older brother," she shrugged."Hey, it's kind of loud in here, wanna go walk in the garden?"
"Are we allowed?"
She grabbed his hand with a smile and led him out into the garden. She weaved through the large fountains and the extravagant flowers that Remus could only fathom how expensive they were.
"Seems like you know this place pretty well," Remus laughed.
"You could say I've been here a couple times," she smiled at him. "Give me a boost,"
Remus boosted her up to a stone wall, climbing shortly behind her. She sat down on the edge of the stone wall, her legs hanging off the edge. The wall looked over a group of several fountains. Remus sat down next to her, admiring the way her skin glowed against the crescent moonlight.
He was also trying extremely hard to hide how terrified he was. He had always been afraid of heights and even though the stone wall wasn't that high, he still wasn't very calm.
"So, your turn for a question," Remus said.
"Hm," her face lit up. "What's your favorite thing to do?"
"Like in my free time or school wise?"
"Both,"
"Well, I like to read and I like quidditch," he said.
"Do you play?" She asked him.
"No, I could never, it's way too high up," he admitted. "I do like watching though, from the safety of the stands,"
"Are you afraid of heights?" The girl teased.
"You already asked your question," Remus evaded the question.
"So is that why your knuckles are white?" She pointed at his hands.
Remus hadn't noticed that he was gripping onto the top of the wall but when he looked down at his hands he saw his knuckles white against the stone. He looked back at the girl with a sheepish smile.
"I'm not scared of heights," he lied.
"So it wouldn't bother you if I did this?" The girl swung her legs around and stood up.
She started walking down the stone wall, her arms out as if she was flying.
"C'mon, come with me," she grinned back at him.
"I'm perfectly fine right here," he gripped the wall tighter.
She walked back to him and held her hand out.
"C'mon, you'll be fine," she smiled. "I promise,"
Before he could answer, the girl grabbed his hand and pulled him up to his feet. Remus stumbled slightly, feeling terrified to say the least. The girl wiggled her hand out of his grip and continued her walk on the wall, leaving Remus there.
She looked back at him and gestured for him to follow her. Remus closed his eyes and slowly took a step, his legs shaking. He took step after step at his own pace, slowly opening his eyes but keeping them trained on the wall.
"See, you're doing it!" The girl smiled.
Remus looked up and saw that she was a couple of yards in front of him. He gave her another sheepish smile which was returned by her taking a step towards him. She stepped on a broken part of the wall that quickly crumbled under her foot. Remus darted to her quicker than he had ever moved before and grabbed her wrist, pulling her close to him. The girl looked up at him with a grin.
"Seems like you're over your fear," she laughed.
"Oh please, I just saved your life and that's the thanks I get," he joked.
"Saved my life?" She laughed. "We're about fifteen feet in the air,"
"Still," Remus looked back over at the back of the Black manor.
The lights were all turned off and there weren't any people around.
"Seems like the party's over dove," Remus commented.
"Seems so," the girl yawned.
"Want me to walk you to your room?" He asked.
"Wow, so gentlemanly of you," y/n smiled.
She let go of Remus's shoulder, which he hadn't even realized she'd grabbed onto, and jumped down from the stone wall. Remus looked down at how far away the ground was. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and jumped. His feet hit the ground and he looked around. He wasn't dead!
"C'mon," y/n held her hand out to him.
He took it, not expecting her to start running. The two ran back through the gardens and back to the door they came out of, only to find it locked. Remus used his wand to unlock it and the pair began their journey to her room.
They continued their game of twenty questions in which they learned a lot about each other. The girl also liked to read and she played quidditch. They both loved chocolate but got into a small debate over dark chocolate and milk chocolate. The girl had a love for potions and art. Which enlightened Remus to the fact that Hogwarts had an art class.
Remus began to grow wary as they turned down the halls. They were getting closer and closer to Sirius's room which he was sharing with his friends.
"Well, here's my room," the girl gestured to a door.
Remus had to stop his jaw from dropping as she pointed to the door he had opened just several hours before. It was y/n's door. He quickly shook the thought that the girl he had been talking to was her. She had never shown any interest in him before. She was definitely just sharing the room with y/n.
Yeah.
That was definitely it.
"I got lucky," the girl, now possibly y/n, said. "My brother and his friends are sharing the room right next door,"
Shit.
So it was y/n.
"That is lucky," Remus breathed out, unable to speak clearly from his sudden realization.
"Well thank you for a fun night," y/n smiled at him.
It suddenly seemed so clear. Of course the girl was y/n. Remus supposed that the curse on the house had made him blind to it but it made so much sense. She looked just like her and was wearing the same dress that Remus had seen her in when he talked to her before.
"Yeah, anytime," he smiled softly, suddenly shy.
Y/n gave him a quick hug.
"Moony!" A voice called from down the hall.
It was Sirius and James, back from their little adventure of the night.
"Who is that with him?" He heard James ask Sirius.
Remus was lucky that his friends were too drunk to see that he was standing in front of y/n's door. Even if they were sober, he was sure that they still wouldn't connect the dots.
"Moony?" Y/n cocked an eyebrow. "That's an odd name,"
"It's a nickname," Remus rubbed the back of his neck.
"I'm glad, I wouldn't want to kiss a guy whose parents named him Moony," she said.
Kiss?
Before Remus had a chance to respond, y/n reached up and slid her hand around the nape of his neck, pulling him close. Her lips brushed against his before pulling him into a quick kiss. She pulled away and gave him a sweet smile. She let go of him, leaving him in shock and opened her door.
"Bye Moony," she said, closing the door behind her.
Remus turned and started walking down the hall, a childish grin on his face. He looked up and saw his best friends with their mouths hanging open.
"Holy shit!" James said.
"Moony's getting all the girls!" Sirius slung his arm around Remus's shoulders. "Who was she?"
"Uhm, I didn't catch her name," Remus mumbled.
"C'mon, you ditch us and spend all night with a girl and you didn't catch her name?" James slurred, his breath smelling like a mixture of alcohol.
Remus rolled his eyes at James' comment but was secretly smiling to himself. He had just been kissed by his long term crush!
