The Laws of Love

Chapter Seventeen

[Recap since it's been awhile:]

"It's not Marissa. It's time to face the truth, I'll never be with you." He stated. His eyes swam with emotions, and before he could turn his face away, one tear escaped; showing me the pain that he was trying so hard to hold inside.

"Rian.." I pleaded while tugging on his shoulder. He wouldn't budge. I enclosed my hand into his, entangling our fingers.

"Don't do this Rian. I don't care. Please, I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to be sorry for, Marissa. It's not your fault at all. I'm only going to end up hurting you, and I can't stand to see you cry."

"Maybe I'm willing to take the chance."

[End of Recap]

A tightening sensation was pushed upon my chest. I wouldn't say it was unfamiliar, I had felt it once before. The day we found out the news about my Uncle, the day we found out we lost him.  I took in Rian's features, his expression, his position. Silence filled the car as, darkness consumed it.

I sat completely still, hoping that Rian would turn my way and give us another shot but, as seconds turned into minutes, I was starting to escape my fantasy. The reality crushing me even harder than, his previous words. I took note of Rian's face, and a sudden movement on my hand caught my attention.  The fingers that I had interlaced with his, were slowly being loosened, and not long after were they fully removed.

On the leather lining of my seat, my hand laid - empty and alone. Rian shifted to his side even more, if that was possible. I tried to swallow the lump that had since formed in my throat, and nodded my head to myself. Almost as reassurance, that this situation wasn't some dream, that Rian was leaving me before, we even started. That I was just a kid and he was an adult. That this was all really happening, and how my words brought it all on. My own words.

The time seemed unreal. The measurement of how many minutes really passed was forgotten. I remain seated, staring out of my window as if, the darkness was a playing a movie.  Two lights came over the slight hilly road, and I turned my gaze towards them. Seconds later, they were stationed directly in front of my car. I reached for my door handle but, before opening it, glanced towards Rian.

His expression still the same, his position, his attitude. I leaned forward a small amount, trying to catch his eye but, he turned himself even further to the side.

I guess that this was it then. This was the end. No going back.

I opened my door and shuffled out, closing it behind me with a bit more force than necessary.

Logan, at this time, was just exiting his truck and arriving in front of my hood.

"I'll see if there is something I can do. If not, you can just ride back with me and we can get it towed in the morning." He stated, while leaning forward and twisting some caps.

"Alright, that sounds fine. Thanks Logan for coming all the way out here."

"It's no problem, Marissa. You know I'd do anything for you, and leaving you out here wasn't an option."  He said, sending a smile my way.

I smiled back in response, my mind still reeling from my conversation with Rian.

Logan stepped back from the car, rubbing his slightly greasy hands on his jeans before, walking to the tool chest that sat across the bed of his truck. He came walking back with a pair of pliers in his hands.

"Just going to check the terminals, it could be your battery." He answered the question that I was thinking.

I nodded in response, letting him focus on the work at hand.

"The nuts are a bit loose on the terminal, that could be the problem." He glanced my way, and I sent a small, probably not-so-convincing smile his way.

"Try to start it up."

I walked back around to the driver side, and opened the door. I reached in, and tried the key. Nothing.

"Well sunshine, I can't really see what's wrong with it. I would probably be able to in the morning, at the shop."

"Okay, that sounds fine. I'm tired anyway." I laughed.

He smiled back, " Just lock it up, and we can get going."

I walked back to the driver side, pulling out the keys and looking at Rian. "Um Rian, we are going to just go back with Logan."

"I'm going to get a taxi."  His voice was hard.

"Huh?" I asked confused.

"I already called for a taxi."

"Alright then." I replied sharply.

He exited the car, as I locked the doors and proceeded towards Logan's truck.  I looked back at him once, and he stood leaning against my car with his head hung low.

As I buckled into the passenger seat of Logan's truck, Logan made a signal to Rian to which I gestured to just go. He obeyed.

A couple minutes of silence passed until, I felt Logan's questionable stare.

"What happened, Marissa?"

I let out a sigh that seemed to sound much more identical to a strangled horse, even though I don't know what that would exactly sound like.

"It's a long story, Logan."

"I've got time."

Of course he would say that.

~*~

I was currently laying down on Logan's bed, and waiting for his reply. I had called my parents and let them know that I'd be at Logan's tonight, and ever since then, I've been telling him everything.

When I say everything, I mean...everything.

I rolled to my side and looked at Logan, who was sitting up against his headboard.

"Well?" I pushed.

"Oh. Uh, wow." He broke out of his thought.

"Thanks, Logan. Man, you know what to say." I replied sarcastically.

"Sorry Marissa, I just don't know what to say." He replied sheepishly.

"Do you think it's for the best?" I asked.

"Honestly? Yeah, I do. I know you said you like him but, maybe you're just confused."

"Confused?" I repeated.

"I'm just saying, you never really had a boyfriend before, and maybe - not saying that I think you did - maybe you just got caught up in the moment." He answered truthfully.

Caught up in the moment? Had I? Were my feelings real feelings or were they just lust? Damn Logan and his Dr.Phil perspectives. He had me questioning myself.

"You think I did?" I asked in a small voice.

"There's really no way to know unless, you wait it out. Plus, if what you guys did feel for eachother was real then,  some time shouldn't mean anything to it." He added reassuringly.

I guess he was right. He did have some valid points, and his logic on time affecting the relationship, if it was worth it, did seem trustworthy. Logan, once again you've made me think straight.

"Thanks Logan." I smiled.

"You're welcome. Now, choose." He demanded while pushing two movies in front of my face, causing me to erupt with laughter.

More to come. Fo sho. :D
