The air was thick with excitement as Milo, Maya, Christian, Owen, Dom, and I made our way to the gym to pick up our caps and gowns. We'd all stuck together throughout high school, and now, we were just days away from the moment we'd all been waiting for. The sun was shining bright, the warmth of it only adding to the feeling of anticipation that buzzed between us.
"I can't believe we're finally here," Maya said, her voice tinged with disbelief as we joined the line outside the gym. "It feels like just yesterday we were starting freshman year."
"Time flies when you're barely passing classes," Christian joked, earning a laugh from the group.
Dom, who had been walking quietly beside us, grinned. "Speak for yourself. I've been ready to graduate since sophomore year."
"You mean since you almost failed chemistry," Owen teased, nudging him with his elbow.
"Hey, I passed, didn't I?" Dom shot back, his grin widening.
We all laughed, the camaraderie between us making this moment even more special. Milo squeezed my hand, and I looked up at him, feeling a sense of comfort in his familiar presence. As much as I loved being with all of them, there was something about being with Milo that made everything feel just right.
When we finally reached the front of the line, the lady at the table handed us our gowns and caps. One by one, we each took our items, our hands brushing against the soft fabric that symbolized the end of this chapter of our lives.
"Let's take a group picture!" Maya suggested, pulling out her phone. We all huddled together, arms slung over each other's shoulders, our caps and gowns proudly on display. The camera clicked, capturing the moment—our final days as high school students.
After the picture, we stood around for a moment, not quite ready to part ways just yet. But we all knew that today was a day to reflect, to spend time in our own ways before the big day arrived.
"So, what's everyone doing now?" Dom asked, looking around at the group.
"I think I'm gonna head home," Owen said, adjusting his cap. "Need to start getting ready for all the graduation stuff."
"Same here," Maya added. "My mom's already planning a million things for the party."
Christian nodded. "Yeah, I've got some stuff to take care of too."
The group exchanged nods and quick goodbyes, with promises to meet up soon. As they walked off in different directions, it was just Milo and me left standing there, the sun casting long shadows on the ground.
"Looks like it's just us," Milo said, his smile soft as he turned to me.
I smiled back, feeling a warmth spread through me. "Just us."
We decided to spend the rest of the day together, wandering through the school grounds and revisiting all the places that held special memories for us. We walked past the library, where we'd spent countless hours studying, the cafeteria where we'd shared lunches with our friends, and the classrooms where we'd worked through challenges and celebrated victories.
