Conversation - Twice
{Heeseung}
"Wow, you're finally early. Having a change of schedule this year, huh?" Jay teases as I approach the bus stop, looking a bit neater than earlier times.
I smack his arm lightly, causing him to wince, "Shut up, I just felt like it today." I muttered. I look around the area and see a familiar boy walking towards the stop. "Hey, isn't that..."
"Jake? Yeah, it is. I didn't know he lives around here."
We both look at him for a second, then immediately look away when we see his head lift up from his phone and glance at us. "Do you think he saw us? I mean, we were pretty obvious." I whisper, making sure no one hears.
He shrugs, "I don't know, but I hope he didn't." He whispers back as his bus approaches. "I have to go now, my bus is here. I'll see you at school." He says while waving before getting on, I nervously wave back. I turn to that Jake kid and I see him still standing there.
Why isn't he getting on the bus?
Wait a minute. Is he on mine? There's only two buses assigned to this station.
I sigh in frustration as my bus approaches the stop, everyone silencing their conversations behind me and stepping on. I sit at the back as usual while everyone takes their seats, continuing what they were saying. But as I grab my earbuds from my backpack, I hear a sweet aussie voice.
"May I sit here?"
I look up and see Jake, standing in the aisle. Everyone's eyes are on him, either shocked or amused to watch him ask to sit next to me."There's nowhere else to sit, please? No talking necessary, I just–"
"You can sit."
His eyes widened, "Thank you..." He mumbled before slowly sitting down next to me, setting his stuff down in front of his feet. He goes on his phone and stays focused on it, but I can see him stealing glances at me. After a while, he turns to me. "Hey, you're Heeseung, right? The dude at lunch yesterday?"
I nod, "Yep, that's me. Jake, huh? Where did you move from?"
"Well, I recently moved from Australia." He pauses, thinking for a while. "You're quite popular here. Have you been going to this school for a while?"
"Yep, ever since freshman year. It gets tiring, but you'll get used to it." I reply, leaning back on the seat, "You seem like the popular type. Were you popular back in Australia?"
He shakes his head, "Not really. I was known, but not that known. You know?" He explains, making me nod.
There were a few moments of silence before he spoke up again, "You know, yesterday at lunch, you were kind of scary. I got kind of intimidated." He chuckles nervously.
"Oh, really?" I say while raising my eyebrow, "Well, I apologize. I was just really cranky and I just wasn't in the mood."
"It's fine, I understand." Jake smiles at me, and fixes his glasses. The sight made me feel something weird, in a good way. "Do you play any sports?"
"Basketball."
He raised his eyebrows and grins, "...Wow, that was fast. I'm impressed, Heeseung. You seem really eager about basketball. Mind telling me some stuff about it?"
I nod, glad someone asked me about my favorite sport. "Sure, why not? I'm happy someone asked me this anyway."
After a few minutes of explaining, Jake's eyebrows furrowed. "That's... a lot of information to take in. I'm intrigued. You could teach me."
"Really? You'll let me do that?" I exclaim, my eyes glowing up at the suggestion. I see Jake nod so I smile brighter. "I'll make sure I'll teach you! I'll be the best coach!"
"Woah, woah. No need to get so hyped." He chuckles, patting the top of my head. "Maybe I could give you something in return."
Give something back?
"Oh, yeah? Like what?" I ask, my back leaning on the window.
I watch Jake as he pretends to think, "Struggling in any subjects right now? Math, history, science, anything currently?"
"I really need help with physics."
He smirks, "Great, I can help you in exchange."
Teaching someone basketball while getting help in my least favorite subject? Such a win-win.
"Great, it's a deal."
The silence quickly becomes comfortable after our conversation, but Jake turns back to me, "You know, I used to hate you. But I think you're pretty chill."
"What? Why?"
"Like, a cocky stubborn bitch, but in a good way."
I raise my eyebrow and smile amusingly, "How is that something in a good way? A cocky stubborn bitch?"
He chuckles, "I just think that you were amusing. You seemed interesting, you know?" Jake ruffles my hair, messing it up. "Your hair is soft."
"Thanks..." I say, trying to sound nonchalant but failing miserably. I look away with a pink hue on my cheeks, causing Jake to laugh. "What are you-"
"Nothing, nothing." He mumbles before looking out the window, "Oh, we're here. I'll see you later." Jake grabs his stuff before getting up to leave.
"Yeah... See you."
