February 1988 - Los Angeles
Maeve's POV
Since I was a little girl I've dreamed about becoming a mother. I always thought that I'd be married by then and my husband would be as excited as me about the arrival of our first child. He would come to every appointment with me and hold my hand throughout every examination.
We would pick out baby names and go shopping for baby items together. And while he builds the baby's furniture I'd sit beside him and correct him whenever needed since he's too proud to read the instructions.
He'd softly caress my huge stomach and every now and then our child would kick and it'd make him feel so happy and proud...
Yet here I am, a few weeks after finding out I'm pregnant with Michael's child, alone at the doctors office. I wanted my doctor to confirm the results before talking to Michael but I was scared that it might not be true that's why I waited for a while to call my gynecologist.
By now I was still throwing up every day but managed to keep some food down in my stomach. I could already notice a small bump but one could easily mistake it with me being bloated.
I haven't met Michael yet. Tomorrow the rehearsals for the second leg of his tour are starting and in 2 weeks we'll be on the road again. I'll have to face him eventually but I still don't know how I'm going to tell him.
"Ms. Harris?" I was called and the nice young lady led me to the room where my gynecologist was already waiting for me.
"You're here to get you're pregnancy confirmed?" he asked and I simply nodded.
"So when was your last period?"
"Um... it was in November, the first or second week, I'm not really sure" I told him.
"And you've been sexually active since then?"
Well, yes obviously.
"Only once" I admitted.
"Well, that's enough to get pregnant" he laughed.
"Any symptoms besides the missing period?"
"Yes, nausea and fatigue. Oh and I have trouble controlling my feelings! I start crying out of nothing!"
"The mood swings are totally normal in that stage of pregnancy and unfortunately there is nothing I can give you for that. However, I can prescribe you some pills against nausea that might help."
"Ok thank you" I smiled at him.
"Ok, shall we take a look?" he asked and I nodded. "You can get undressed quickly and then take a seat over there. Here's a blanket for you to cover up and I'll be with you in a bit" he explained before leaving the room.
The chair at the gynecologist always made me feel uncomfortable but this time I was excited because this felt like a dream. A few minutes after I sat down the doctor came back and started the examination.
I looked at the monitor and paniced a little when there wasn't a baby but then out of nowhere it appeared and it already seemed so big.
"Well, congratulations Ms. Harris. you are indeed pregnant." I smiled widely, my eyes were glued to the monitor.
"And from the size of it, it looks like you're already 3,5 months along" he paused and looked at a paper where he scribbled down some things earlier. "Yes that's about what I calculated."
He then explained that I was a little late and that most women come earlier to find out that they're pregnant. I am already in my second trimester which meant the risk of losing the baby is very low now.
Since I was so late, he checked the baby thoroughly but didn't find anything suspicious.
"Oh I nearly forgot" he then pressed a button and a fast heartbeat could be heard.
"Is that-" I couldn't finish the sentence since tears already started rolling down my face. Happy tears of course.
"Yes, this is your baby's heartbeat."
That was the moment I realized there really was a baby inside of me and that Michael and I are going to be parents.
I still have to tell him first, though.
When I left the doctor's office he handed me some ultrasound pictures of the baby, a CD with the baby's heartbeat and a prescription for the pills that are supposed to help with the nausea.
