After dropping Summer and Kimberly off at their homes, I find myself alone with Dixi. Out of everyone in our friend group, Dixi is undoubtedly my closest friend, and I know I hold the same place in her heart. As I slide into the passenger seat, I turn to her and break the silence.
"Do you recall the time we visited that quaint café named Beach Breeze?" I inquire, a touch of nostalgia lacing my words.
"Oh yes, those subs were absolutely bomb," she responds, her eyes still fixed on the road ahead.
"When we encountered Teddy at the café, he mentioned that he and Quinn have committed to UNC to play basketball. That's the reason behind their party he threw" I reveal, observing her reaction closely.
The car comes to an abrupt halt, causing me to lurch forward. "Dixi!" I exclaim, taken aback.
"What?" she exclaims, finally diverting her gaze from the road to look at me. "They are going to UNC?" she repeats, her ocean blue eyes wide with astonishment.
"I'm torn between feeling happy and upset," she admits, her voice filled with conflicting emotions.
"Why would you feel happy?" I ask, genuinely curious.
"Because I would get to see Quinn's handsome face again, but I assure you, I will not make any advances towards him," she says, her tone sincere.
"You better not. He's Teddy's best friend." I warn, my voice firm.
"I'm not going to talk to Teddy, not after I saw Lena in his house," I state resolutely, my mind replaying the scene that left me feeling betrayed.
Changing the subject, Dixi inquires, "Are we gonna talk about how the bruise on your head and the cut on your cheek are practically gone?" Her eyes scrutinize my face before she accelerates the car again.
"What can I say? Teddy's a good doctor," I respond dreamily, a soft smile playing on my lips.
Dixi slaps my shoulder lightly. "Bitch, we're supposed to be hating on him right now. You're making it hard," she says with a mock sternness that makes me chuckle.
Arriving at my house, I give Dixi a heartfelt goodbye hug and hop out of the Jeep, grabbing my luggage. As she drives off, I take a moment to look at my house in the North Carolina suburbs. The familiar sight brings a sense of relief. The temperature is perfect—not too hot—and a gentle breeze makes my ponytail sway, my brunette hair occasionally flying into my mouth, which I spit out, slightly souring the moment.
My parents' cars are parked in the driveway, and my white Ford Fiesta sits behind my dad's truck. Walking up to the door, I punch in the code and push it open. My golden retriever, Bentley, excitedly trots up to me, sniffing me eagerly.
"Hey, Bentley! I missed you so much," I say, petting his head affectionately. Bentley follows me as I run upstairs, tossing my suitcase onto my bed. The comforting smell of dinner being prepared wafts through the house, even though it's only 4 PM. I know my mom likes to take her time cooking.
