WHEN YOU DIE, YOUR SOUL ARRIVES AT THE BANK OF THE RIVER STYX. There you are met with Charon, or as many mortals refer to him now as, the grim reaper, who is the ferryman that guides you across the river to the underworld.

Upon arrival, your soul would be brought before Hades, the ruler of the underworld, who would determine the fate of your soul based on the deeds you did during your life. Those who were deemed virtuous and righteous might be rewarded with a pleasant afterlife, while those who were wicked might be punished.

In what used to be an unusual case, your soul might not be able to pass through these trails if it has unfinished business. For example, there have been cases where people die suddenly, and their loved ones feel that their soul is lingering because they left something unsaid. Now, as people, especially demigods, die young, there are more souls trapped with unfinished business.

If this is the case, then Hades would send your soul back up to the land of the living until you realize or resolve your unfinished business.

As easy as this sounds, Hades made one grave mistake. You see, when you die, your soul detaches from your body forever. Without a body, you can't commune with the living to complete your unfinished business and you wouldn't be able to enter the mortal realm. Instead, you are stuck forever in what is called the spirt realm, a place in between death and life where these souls reside.

While in this realm, mortals cannot see you, cannot touch you, and cannot hear you. You are stuck with no one noticing you for eternity. There was no way out.

Growing up, Ryoko never got along with her foster families. They thought of her as strange and somewhat insane, she thought so too.

As far as she could remember she has been able to see the dead. Everyone just told her she was schizophrenic, but she didn't have any other symptoms other than "hallucinations". She didn't have memory issues and she could process social cues just fine. She was labeled as mentally ill and put in a mental hospital a few instances.

This lead to having to switch foster family more times than she could count. Most of which were cruel to her for what she saw.

The first time she ever told anyone about it was in her second foster home. At the ripe age of six, Ryoko was alone in a large bedroom unpacking her possessions when she saw a ghost like figure in the appearance of a small woman. She sat on the edge of her bed folding her clothes.

Ryoko assumed the old woman was the family's maid, the house was pretty big after all and the parents seemed to be quite wealthy.

The two made eye contact and Ryoko smiled at her. The woman froze and stared at her in shock. "I- , you- are you looking at me?"

Ryoko gave her a confused look and then chuckled. "Of course I am, you're the only one here."

"How can you see me?" She said still frozen in shock.

Ryoko's smile faded, "What do you mean? You're right in front of me."

In panic, the maid jumped up and melted through the door. At the sight, Ryoko let out a horrifying screech and bolted down the white marble stairs of the mansion.

She ran through kitchens and into the parlor where the adults sat. She ranted to them about the woman, but they seemed confused.

Her foster mother gave her a look of concern, "Oh honey, there is no maid here."

Ryoko protested, making the family more and more concerned. Later, they excused the maid as one of Ryoko's imaginary friends.

It was only when the girl summoned her "imaginary friend" into their sight a week later, that they realized the insanity that she was. They accused her of working with a devil and forbade her from stepping foot in their house again. They never told anyone about the incident, just said the little girl must have been schizophrenic. That name stuck with her for the rest of her life.
