RYOKO WAS NOT THE MOST SOCAIL PERSON. Between moving homes every couple months, quite personality, and eerie reputation, she didn't have a lot of time or energy to make friends. That was until she was transferred to a wilderness school for "troubled kids" after she brought a dead poets spirit back to his physical form at a classmates bat mitzvah. Apparently people didn't like hearing true 1800s poetry.

So there she sat, in the second to last row of the school bus, on her way to The Grand Canyon for a school trip. Ryoko thought it was funny that the only thing to have fun the school could come up with was looking at rock formations and holes in the ground.

She sat next to Leo Valdez, who was really the only person Ryoko would even consider a friend.

Leo looked a bit like a Latino Santa's elf, with curly black hair, pointy ears, a cheerful, babyish face, and a mischievous smile that told you right away this guy should not be trusted around matches or sharp objects. His long, nimble fingers wouldn't stop moving—drumming on the seat, sweeping him hair behind his ears fiddling with the buttons on his army fatigue jacket. Either the kid was naturally hyper or he was hopped on enough sugar and caffeine to give a heart attack to a water buffalo.

They had met long before the wilderness school, in a foster home when the two were merely twelve years of age. They became close friends rather quickly and Ryoko was the first person Leo had ever told about his mother.

He was a bit of an oddball, but she guessed that was good because he was the only one in Ryoko's whole life who seemed to believe her when she told him she wasn't really schizophrenic and that she could talk to the dead. Okay well, maybe he didn't fully believe that last part, but at least he had an open mind.

She was trying to drown out the sound of Coach Hedge, their chaperone, who seemed to have no concept of volume, when Piper spoke up from behind her. "Jason, you okay?"

Ah yes, Piper McLean. The girl wasn't very fond of Ryoko, and the feeling seemed to be mutual. At first, Ryoko thought the reason Piper didn't like her was because of her standoffish personality and snarky behavior. She gave off an eerie vibe and mostly kept to herself. Besides the few times she came to the cafeteria for lunch and they sat at the same table, but that was mainly just because Leo was there.

Ryoko had to admit, the behavior part was mainly just towards Piper  to annoy her, but the main reason Piper didn't like her, was that she had tried to steal Jason from her.

During Ryoko's third month at the academy, her and Jason had kissed during the towns winter carnival. Supposedly, this was right after Piper had told her that she had feeling for Jason.

The funny thing was, Ryoko had no memory of any of this whatsoever. She'd never had any romantic feelings towards Jason. It's not like he wasn't handsome, he was, but Ryoko never really had a romantic interest in any guy.
