Not long ago, in the garden of the palace of the Samiras is where a short story takes part. The youngest princess was roaming around the castle walls until she made it to the garden. She saw a young boy admiring the blooming wine red roses.

His hair was quite long, for someone very young. His hair is dark, but there was bright orange streaks running through the dark locks. He had bright blue eyes are brighter than a Samira’s gaze. His species was not identifiable from afar, but he looked like a fox of some sort.

The princess was mesmerized on how this young boy looked handsome for a child. She figured out that he looked like her father’s adviser, so there’s a chance that he could be the son of the king’s adviser.

As Viliua was watching from a far, the young boy named Kalao noticed her. She was surprised that he noticed her from a distance. Suddenly, the boy ran off deeper in the garden in embarrassment. It was not long after Viliua found him hiding behind a bush.

“Why did you run away from me?” asked the princess.

“I-I’m sorry your highness. I’m just shy around a lot of people.” The boy replied.

“Don’t call me ‘your highness.’ Call me Vil for now!” She said cheerfully.

“Ok… Vil. When can I call you ‘your highness’ then?” the boy asked.

“When I turn sixteen! Erm… by the way, what’s your name?”

“Oh-! My name is Kalao. It's nice to meet you princess Vil.”

“Its nice to meet you too Kalao! Are you perhaps the son of my dad’s adviser? Mr.  Taru?” Viliua asked.

“..yes, I am his son.” He replied.

“Woah.. I knew it! You look a lot like Mr. Taru.”

“I do…? Well you do look like your dad too.”

“Mhm! A lot of people say that, hehe.”

The children continued their conversations in the garden. They asked the typical questions like “when’s your birthday?” “what abilities do you have?” and so on. The more the talked the more they understood each other. And soon enough they created a strong bond.

Hours passed and it was already dinner time for the royal family. Viliua didn’t want to leave Kalao in the corner, so she asked if Kalao could eat on the dinner table with them.

“Oh my! It seemed like the both of you got along!” Said Viliua’s mother.

“Just on time, I was about to ask young Kalao to be your personal servant.” Said the king.

“Wow! Really? I would like Kalao to stay by my side no matter what!” Viliua replied.

“I would also like that..” Kalao mumbled.

“Hold on Viliua, I have to ask his father if it's alright.”

“Awe, okay..” Viliua said.

“Well… that depends with my son, not me your majesty.” Said Mr. Taru from behind.

“What’s your decision young Kalao?” Asked king.

While Kalao was thinking about the offer, Viliua was looking at Kalao. ‘Please say yes’ her eyes spoke. Kalao wanted to stay with his father too since he was always home alone in the noble’s paradise. He used to stay with his mother at home, but she left him and his father out of nowhere not long ago.

He also wanted to stay with his new friend Viliua, since she also liked being around him. So, Kalao accepted the offer from the king.

After a few weeks in staying inside of the palace, It was difficult for Kalao to adjust into the new environment, new room, even new clothes. Each day he learnt how to serve the princess, but he also learned more about her, even the smallest flaws she has.

Despite the things that he knew about her, he still stayed loyal to her like a puppy. He would go everywhere with her, take care of her, and talk to her everyday. Weeks quickly turn into months, then months eventually turn to years of serving the youngest daughter of the royal family, the Samiras.

Meanwhile Viliua, she liked Kalao, Platonically that is. She enjoyed being around him, because he was one of her closest friends. But she was also great friends with the younger members of the other royal families, so Kalao was just another friendship that she treasures.

As the two became closer day by day, everyone thought that they were in love with each other. But the both of them kept denying, while the other one had butterflies in their stomach.

When tragedy struck in the castle, Kalao would always stay outside of the bedroom door of Princess Viliua. Even when the sudden death of prince Larco took place, Viliua thought that Kalao left the room that day. But he really took a few steps away from the door and stood there like a guard dog.

The other servants and maids also admire the bond between the servant and the princess. Whenever they saw them together, they thought they were watching a scene from a romance novel. Despite the years that passed even when both kids turned into teenagers, everybody still believes that the both of them will get married some day.

I mean, couldn’t blame them. Both of them are attached to the hip, they have fine looks and it looked like they were paired by cupid himself. But Viliua and Kalao still denied the kind of relationship that everyone thought they had, ‘we are just close friends, that’s all.’

But earlier of this story, someone had fluttering butterflies in their stomach. Someone had romantic feelings for the other person. They couldn’t be honest since they think that they weren’t meant to be together.

Kalao has been by Viliua’s side for ten whole years, that he trusted her that she could be a great queen for this kingdom. But he didn’t want to be her king, not because he’s 'not'  in love with her, but because he’s not qualified to reach the standards of the common folk. He cared for Viliua to the point where he started to love her from a far. But he knew deep down in his heart, someone better than him, will do a better job in taking care of her.

But he still tries his best to keep Viliua out of trouble. He even joined the royal force to ensure the safety of the princess. He didn't take the training too seriously, his job was to look out for Viliua.  He even got out of his way from stopping her from fighting a ‘stronger’ knight. This was a part of his offer, but he went beyond to protect Viliua. With or without the king and queen’s offer.

Everything he did, everything that has been done by him alone was everything that Viliua was thankful for. She was grateful for not just having a servant, but also a loyal friend who never left her in her bedroom walls of her palace. But she never looked at him at a romantic angle, but she still stayed by his side no matter what. She knows that one day, she could repay him.
