Over the next few weeks, Claire and Alex continued to see each other, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. They chose quiet, relaxing places for their dates—cosy cafes, serene parks, and quaint bookstores. Alex was always cautious, avoiding crowded areas where he might be recognized. He enjoyed the anonymity, the chance to be just Alex, without the shadow of his past looming over him.
Despite his busy schedule, Alex made a point to find time for Claire. His work often required him to travel, but he always managed to squeeze in a call or a quick visit. Claire appreciated his efforts, and they both worked hard to make their budding relationship thrive.
One evening, after a particularly gruelling shift at the hospital, Claire was on the verge of cancelling their planned date. She was exhausted, her feet aching, and all she wanted was to collapse into bed. She picked up her phone to call Alex, but before she could dial, it rang.
"Hey, Claire," Alex's voice came through, warm and cheerful. "I was thinking, instead of going out tonight, how about I come over and cook for you?"
Claire hesitated. "I don't want to be a bother, Alex. I'm really tired."
"That's exactly why I want to do this," Alex insisted. "You deserve a break. Let me take care of you tonight."
Touched by his thoughtfulness, Claire agreed. A short while later, Alex arrived at her apartment, carrying bags of groceries. He set to work in the kitchen, and Claire watched in amazement as he moved with practised ease, chopping vegetables and stirring pots.
"I had no idea you could cook," Claire said, leaning against the counter.
Alex grinned. "There are a lot of things you don't know about me yet."
The aroma of a delicious meal soon filled the apartment, and Claire felt her exhaustion melting away. They sat down to a candlelit dinner, and Claire couldn't help but marvel at the effort Alex had put into making the evening special.
"This is amazing," she said, savouring a bite of the perfectly cooked pasta. "Thank you, Alex."
"Anything for you," he replied, his eyes twinkling with affection.
As the weeks went by, their relationship deepened. They shared more about their lives, their dreams, and their fears. Claire found herself falling for Alex, appreciating his kindness, humour, and the way he made her feel valued and cherished.

One day, Claire was visiting her parents for the weekend, enjoying the comfort of home and the warmth of family. After a hearty dinner, they settled in the living room. Her dad switched on the television, eager to catch the evening football game. Claire, as usual, was uninterested. She sat beside her mom, chatting about work and life, while the game played in the background.
"Claire, look at this," her mom said suddenly, pointing at the screen. "Isn't that your friend Alex?"
Claire turned her attention to the TV, her heart skipping a beat. There, on the screen, was Alex, speaking calmly as one of the moderators. She stared in disbelief, the realization dawning on her. Alex wasn't just a media professional; he was a former national football player.
Her mind raced with questions and emotions. Why hadn't he told her? What else had he kept from her? She felt a mix of confusion and betrayal. Excusing herself, she went to the kitchen and pulled out her phone. Her fingers trembled as she typed a message to Alex.
Can you call me when you get off work? We need to talk.
The hours dragged on, and Claire's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. When her phone finally rang, she answered immediately.
"Hey, Claire," Alex's voice came through, but he quickly sensed something was wrong. "Is everything okay?"
"Alex," Claire began, her voice steady but tinged with hurt. "I saw you on TV tonight. As a football moderator."
There was a pause on the other end. "Claire, I can explain," Alex said, his voice filled with worry. "I was planning to tell you the next time we met. I didn't want to hide it from you."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Claire asked, her emotions bubbling to the surface. "I feel blindsided, Alex. I hate lies, and even though you didn't lie directly, it feels like you did."
"I didn't want to scare you away," Alex admitted. "I knew how you felt about football, and I was afraid it would change things between us. I wanted you to get to know me for who I am now, not who I used to be."
Claire took a deep breath, trying to process his words. "I understand why you did it, but it still hurts. It feels like a breach of trust."
"I never meant to hurt you, Claire," Alex said, his voice earnest. "I care about you so much, and I was going to tell you. I just wanted to find the right moment."
Claire was silent for a moment, her mind racing. "I need some time to think about this, Alex. I need to figure out how I feel and what this means for us."
"I understand," Alex said softly. "Take all the time you need. I'll be here, waiting for your call."
As they hung up, Claire felt a mix of emotions. She cared deeply for Alex, but this revelation had shaken her. She needed time to sort through her feelings and decide what to do next.
