The night of the charity gala had finally arrived, and Claire was feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. It was her first time attending such an event, and despite the media training she had received, she couldn't help but feel a bit anxious. Alex, sensing her unease, tried to calm her down.
"Claire, you look stunning," he said, admiring her elegant jumpsuit. "I promise I'll stay with you as much as possible, but I might have to talk to my boss for a few minutes. Don't worry, Tom and some of the others will be there too."
Claire smiled, feeling a bit reassured. "Thanks, Alex. You look pretty dashing yourself."
It was her first time seeing Alex in a fancy suit, and she couldn't help but be impressed by how handsome he looked. They left for the gala, and upon arriving, Claire was struck by the elegance of the venue. The room was filled with well-dressed guests, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.
As they made their way through the crowd, Alex introduced Claire to various people, each one more charming and welcoming than the last. Claire felt her nerves slowly dissipating, especially with Alex by her side.
"Claire!" a familiar voice called out. She turned to see Tom approaching, a wide grin on his face. He gave her a warm hug. "You look amazing!"
"Thanks, Tom," Claire replied, feeling genuinely happy to see him.
Alex's boss arrived shortly after, and Alex excused himself to go talk to him. "I'll be back soon," he promised, giving Claire's hand a reassuring squeeze.
Tom stayed with Claire, and they had a great time joking around and chatting. Tom's lively personality made her feel at ease, and she found herself laughing and enjoying the evening. However, Tom soon spotted someone he needed to talk to and excused himself.
Feeling a bit awkward alone, Claire decided to check out the fancy buffet. She sampled a few of the appetizers, savouring the exquisite flavours. As she was trying a particularly delicious canapé, a young man approached her.
"Excuse me," he said, his voice polite. "How's the food? Any recommendations?"
Claire jumped slightly, not having heard him approach. "Oh, um, the canapés are really good," she replied honestly. "Especially this one with the smoked salmon."
The young man smiled, clearly surprised by her straightforwardness. "Thanks for the tip. I'm James, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, James. I'm Claire," she said, shaking his hand.
They chatted for a while, and Claire found herself enjoying the conversation. James asked her about her connection to football, mentioning that he hadn't seen her before.
"I'm just here with my boyfriend," Claire explained. "I don't really know much about football."
James chuckled. "I guessed as much. It's refreshing, actually. Most people here are either fans or involved in the sport somehow."
They continued talking, and James seemed to appreciate Claire's honesty and relaxed attitude. He enjoyed her presence, finding it a relief to talk to someone who didn't have any preconceived notions about him.
Meanwhile, Alex finished his conversation with his boss and began looking for Claire. He was surprised to find her not with Tom but talking to James, the current national number one football player. Alex was a bit speechless, as he hadn't had the chance to meet James yet.
He walked over, and Claire introduced them. "Alex, this is James. We were just talking about the food."
"Nice to meet you, James," Alex said, shaking his hand.
"Likewise," James replied with a smile. "Claire's been great company."
They chatted for a bit longer until James had to go elsewhere. As he left, Alex gave Claire a questioning glance. "How did you manage to talk to him? He usually doesn't talk to anyone."
Claire shrugged, smiling. "I guess he liked that I didn't know who he was."
The rest of the evening went smoothly, and Claire felt more at ease with each passing moment. They mingled with other guests, enjoyed the entertainment, and even danced a little. By the end of the night, Claire felt a sense of accomplishment and relief.
Back at Alex's place, they settled on the couch, exhausted but happy. "You did great tonight," Alex said, wrapping his arm around her.
"Thanks, Alex," Claire replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "I couldn't have done it without you."
They cuddled together, reminiscing about the evening and feeling closer than ever. The gala had been a success, and they both knew they could face any challenge as long as they were together.
