~Y/n's POV~The roar of the crowd was deafening as we stepped onto the court. The energy in the arena was electric, and it felt like the entire world was watching. I glanced over at Paige, my girlfriend and teammate, and she gave me a reassuring smile. We were playing against Notre Dame, one of the toughest teams in the league, but we were ready. This was our moment.
"Let's do this, babe," Paige said, her eyes sparkling with determination.
"Yeah, let's show them what we've got," I replied, feeling a surge of adrenaline.
The game started off intense, with both teams fighting for every point. Paige was on fire, making shot after shot, and I was right there with her, setting up plays and blocking our opponents. We had a rhythm, a connection that made us unstoppable.
"Nice pass!" Paige shouted as I threaded the ball through two defenders to her. She caught it effortlessly and sank a three-pointer. The crowd erupted in cheers.
"Great shot, Paige!" I yelled back, feeling a rush of pride. I have the best girlfriend in the world.
As the game progressed, the score remained tight. Notre Dame was relentless, but so were we. I could feel the strain in my muscles, the sweat dripping down my face, but I pushed through. This was what we had trained for.
Then, it happened. I was sprinting down the court, the ball in my hands, when I felt a sharp pain in my knee. It was like a hot knife slicing through my leg. I stumbled, and everything seemed to slow down. I could see Paige's face, her eyes wide with concern, but I couldn't stop my fall. My knee buckled, and I hit the ground hard, my head slamming against the hardwood.
The pain was excruciating. I tried to move, but my body wouldn't respond. I could hear the gasps from the crowd, the shouts of my teammates, but it all felt distant, like I was underwater.
"Y/n!" Paige's voice cut through the haze. I could see her pushing through the crowd of players, her face etched with worry. "Move! Let me through!"
She reached me, dropping to her knees by my side. She took me face between her hands, gently moving my head onto her lap. "Y/n, can you hear me? Are you okay?"
I tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. The pain in my knee was overwhelming, and my head throbbed with every heartbeat. I could see the fear in Paige's eyes, and it broke my heart. I wanted to tell her I was okay, that everything would be fine, but I couldn't.
"Somebody get help!" Paige shouted, looking around frantically. Her voice cracked. "She needs help! Help her!"
The world around me started to blur, the edges of my vision darkening. I could feel myself slipping away, the pain becoming a dull throb as my consciousness faded. Paige's voice was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
~Paige's POV~
As I held Y/n in my arms, the world seemed to blur around me. The sounds of the crowd, the shouts, and the gasps all faded into a distant hum. My heart pounded in my chest, and I could feel my hands shaking as I cradled her head, trying to keep her still. Her face was pale, and her eyes were closed. I could see a small trickle of blood forming on the court from where she had hit her head.
"Somebody help!" I screamed, my voice cracking with desperation. "Please, we need help!"
But the help wasn't coming fast enough. The seconds felt like hours, and every moment that passed was agony. I looked around, seeing the chaos and confusion on the faces of the people around us. They were all just standing there, frozen, as if they didn't know what to do.
I couldn't wait any longer. I had to do something. I had to get her help.
"Move!" I shouted, pushing people out of the way. "Get out of the way!"
I slipped my arms under her, lifting her as gently as I could. She was lighter than I expected, and adrenaline gave me the strength I needed. I started running, my legs burning with effort, but I didn't care. All that mattered was getting her to safety.
"Paige, wait!" KK called after me, Geno following quickly behind her, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop.
I burst through the doors of the gym, the cool air hitting my face like a slap. I saw the ambulance in the distance, its lights flashing, but it felt like it was miles away. I kept running, my breath coming in ragged gasps. I could feel Y/n's body limp in my arms, and it terrified me.
"Hang on, Y/n," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. I moved a stray strand of hair from her face. I've never been so scared in my life. "Please, hang on."
Finally, I reached the ambulance. The paramedics rushed to us, taking Y/n from my arms and laying her on a stretcher. I watched as they worked quickly, checking her vitals and securing her neck.
"Is she going to be okay?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"We're doing everything we can," one of the paramedics said, not looking up from his work. "We need to get her to the hospital."
I climbed into the ambulance, my hands shaking as I held onto the side. KK followed, the color drained from her face. Geno told us he would meet us at the hospital. The doors slammed shut, and the ambulance roared to life, speeding towards the hospital.
"She's strong, Paige," KK said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "She's going to be okay."
I nodded, but I couldn't shake the fear that gripped my heart. I watched as the paramedics continued to work on Y/n, their faces serious and focused.
"Y/n, please wake up," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I need you to wake up."
KK squeezed my shoulder, trying to offer comfort, but I could see the worry in her eyes too. We both sat there, helpless, as the ambulance sped through the streets.
When we finally arrived at the hospital, the paramedics rushed Y/n inside, and I followed, my heart pounding. They took her into a room, and I was left standing in the hallway, feeling lost and scared.
"Paige, come sit down," Kk said, guiding me to a chair. "They're going to take care of her."
I sat down, my legs feeling like jelly. I buried my face in my hands, the tears finally coming in full force. KK sat beside me, her arm around my shoulders. It should've been me.
"She's going to be okay," Kk said softly. "She's tough. She's going to pull through this."
I nodded, but the fear and worry were overwhelming. I couldn't lose her. I couldn't imagine my life without her.
Hours seemed to pass, though it was probably only minutes, before a doctor finally came out to talk to us.
"Ms. Bueckers?" he asked, looking at me. "I'm Dr. Mitchell. Y/n is stable, but she's going to need surgery for her ACL, and we're monitoring her head injury closely."
"Can I see her?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes, but only for a few minutes," he said. "She's still unconscious, but she's in good hands."
I followed him into the room, my heart in my throat. Y/n lay on the bed, looking so small and fragile. I sat beside her, taking her hand in mine.
"Hey, Y/n," I whispered, my voice shaking. "I'm here. I'm right here."
KK stood at the door, giving us some space. I could see the worry in her eyes, but she gave me a reassuring nod.
"You have to get better," I said, squeezing her hand. "I need you. We all need you. You're going to get through this."
As I sat there, holding her hand, I felt a sense of fear crash over me. She had to wake up. We need her. I need her.
