"Move out of the way,"

"Who got the top score?"

"No way…"

The hallways were full of chatter and thuds as students fell from trying to push their way to the front of the bulletin board.

The ranking for the mid-term exam was released

In the span of 3 seconds , I  witnessed multiple reactions all at once . Some burst into tears after seeing that they ranked 270 out of the 300 students in our cohort . Some jumped with joy when they found out they were one of the top 50 students.

But for me ? I always knew what I would rank . First , I had always ranked first . I didn't even need to check the bulletin board to know my ranking because it had been the same for the past 6 years .

I gave myself a pat on the shoulder , turning to leave that extremely crowded area full of  sweaty and overly emotional students .

"Who is Joseph Gong ? He is number 1"

This sentence made me stop in my tracks

maybe I heard wrongly , maybe the student hit their head before making the remark

flabbergasted, I spun around at the speed of light, making a loud screeching noise with my shoe , before pushing students out of the way to check the board .

My jaw dropped, and my expression immediately turned sour when I saw my name , ranked second , under one person.

1.Joseph Gong
2. Evelyn Taylor Li

The hallways turned deadly silent as the attention of the crowd of students turned to me . Not even a pin drop could be heard in those hallways , teachers who walked by even stopped in their tracks .

To witness me

Evelyn Taylor Li

Be bested by someone

They were waiting for my reaction , all eyes on me . I was used to being at the centre of attention but never for being beaten by someone .

Soon, the silence turned into whispers of gossip and words mocking me . I have never been this humiliated in all my life .

Being the only daughter of the famous Henry Li and Alice Sun came with expectations.

Expectations I failed to meet

My eyes blurred with tears, and I felt my face heating up as I stared daggers into the bulletin board . Expecting it to turn back to what it was supposed to be , this must be some cruel joke being played on me by the world as a punishment for being too haughty  I suppose.

Despite the tears burning the back of my eyes , I forced myself to smile even when it felt like all hope shattered .

All of a sudden , I snapped back to reality

Who is Joseph Gong ?

At this moment , loud thuds could be heard coming closer . As the footsteps came closer , all the attention that was originally on me shifted to the mysterious person . Closer and closer , the footsteps made a slow, deliberate rhythm that sent chills down my spine .

I forced myself not to turn back as I knew exactly who the person behind me could be . But out of curiosity, I turned back anyways , only to find the most gorgeous human being standing in front of me .

black hair like ebony

cold black eyes that reminded me of a winter night

sharp cheekbones

straight eyebrows

if God had favourites , he was definitely one .

My jaw dropped as the person, who I assume was Joseph , stepped forward towards me and stared down at me with eyes that looked as if he was looking down on me .

I hated the way he looked at me ,no one had ever looked down on me before .

From that day onwards, I swore that I would hate Joseph Gong for as long as I lived
