"THAT'S WHAT happens when you decide to paint your dead guardian's room in the middle of the night." Jeremy remarked, turning to eye at Elena.
Who was not impressed with the sarcasm.
Stefan was casually leaning against the wall, showing up initially to check up on the siblings, wanting to help, and was now witnessing the exchange in front of him.
"I don't suppose anyone tried to talk you guys out of doing this... so soon." He stated, breaking away from his former position and moving into the room, the smell of paint sharper.
"We have to keep moving," Elena intercepted, clearly still shaken from last night's events.
"Otherwise, we'll... start thinking and... we don't want to think." She finished, mumbling the last bit, continuing to work and stroke the walls with the paint. To completely diminish its former layer.
If only you could that for moments. For events. She inevitably thought.
"You want a hand?" Stefan offered, a faint grin playing on his lips, making eye contact with Elena.
To which, Elena smiled back, endeared by his readiness to help her and Jeremy cope with such a huge loss.
"I don't have anyone anymore." She had cried out, completely distressed with the way a night of dance had turned into such a nightmare.
What else is new?
She felt so alone...
Stefan softly caressed her cheek, wanting to somehow comfort her. It was as if he could feel her grief as it came pouring out in that one moment.
"You have me." He told her. And he'd really meant it.
And then, Elena crumbled there in his arms, right in the middle of the deserted school gym.
"—So, are you two like, back together or something?" Jeremy asked, out of the blue, quite bluntly.
Elena, suddenly flushed and embarrassed spoke out to deny his claims.
"No, Jere, we're just—" She had started, scoffing.
She wasn't sure what to say exactly. A part of her was too scared to say "friend" and the other, too indecisive to say anything else.
Stefan, clearly awkward from the bold question, also spoke up.
"I—I was just checking up on you guys. Seeing how you were doing." He blatantly said.
Elena then couldn't help but passing a glance at him. A look.
He's just so casually compassionate, her mind thought.
"After everything..." He explained, looking at Jeremy.
"We're fine." Jeremy abruptly said, seemingly on edge too.
"But... if you are trying to be the good guy again, why don't you do the right thing and give us one day. Just one day without any vampires in it." He said, aggressively. Clearly exhausted with the supernatural ordeal as a whole.
After which, he passed a look at Elena and then left the room, irritated.
"He didn't mean that..." She sighed, trying to defend his behavior, throwing the roller onto the paint tray, not really in the mood to paint anymore.
"Yeah. Yeah, he did." Stefan said, his smile only further establishing his resigned tone.
She looked at him for a moment.
How he was able to stay so in control of his emotions was beyond her.
Sometimes, it kind of irked at her. Because she wasn't able to tell what exactly it was that he was feeling.
