Chapter Four
***
Klaus is un-daggering Rebekah, his original sister. I find it both intriguing and disturbing that Klaus daggered all of his siblings at some point, especially over disagreements.
We're heading towards where her tomb is, and suddenly I'm stopped. Pinned against a wall. "You're going to stay put, love. You're not going to move until I come back."
Klaus is trying to compel me, but he should know better. I'm covered head to toe in vervain. "Nice try."
His lips are tracing the skin on my neck, and my cheeks are fighting blush. I have absolutely no idea what the awful hybrid is trying to do.
"Klaus, stop."
The worst part is that the feeling of his lips on my neck makes my whole body warm with satisfaction. Whatever he's trying to do, it's working. I can't let him seduce me into giving him what he wants.
He rips my vervain necklace off. "There we go."
"Good luck finding the rest of the vervain on me. And inside of me."
Klaus grunts before reluctantly throwing my necklace back into my hands. "We're going to have to try this the old fashioned way."
He pushes me against the wall again. "Move from this spot and I stake Stefan. Are we clear, love?"
I nod.
"Good."
I watch from a distance as Klaus storms off in a huff. He slowly opens a tomb that holds his original sister.
I watch as he pulls the dagger out of her body and as they wait for her to awaken. She's stunning. Pure blonde hair frames her face, and her beauty is angelic yet terrifying. Rebekah is still motionless.
Klaus looks at a guardsman and compels him. "Tell her to come to Gloria's bar when she wakes up. And you'll let her feed on you."
Klaus suddenly appears next to me. "Come on, love."
Klaus just sacrificed an innocent for her to feed on. He makes me sick.
"Where are we supposed to be going now?" I ask, aimlessly following the two vampires.
"Stefan's old apartment. To remind him who he is," Klaus whispers into my ear.
I shake only slightly, looking to the side. "You're sick."
***
Klaus kicks down the door. Him and Stefan enter the apartment, and while they're heading towards the cabinet, I stare into the empty hallway.
Can I outrun Klaus?
It's time to find out.
I slowly exit the room as the two talk, and as soon as I'm out of eye sight, I run. My breaths are heavy as I opt for the elevator. I can hear someone running behind me, and then I see Klaus.
The elevator doors close in his face.
I sigh in relief, but when the door opens at the bottom floor, Klaus is standing there.
"Shit," I mumble as I press the button to close the doors as quick as I can.
Instead, he comes into the elevator at top speed, throwing me into the wall so hard that it leaves a dent in the steel.
I whimper slightly as I look up. "That was brave," Klaus whispers. "But incredibly stupid, love."
"Let me go," I demand.
He grabs my wrist, holding it up as proof that he isn't going to let me go. "I'd rather not. But you'd make things a whole lot easier if you weren't so uncooperative."
I hate being dragged along like this. "Hold onto her until we get back to the bar, Stefan. She's clearly very insistent on escaping."
Stefan holds my arm tightly, and I only now remember how strong he is. I look up to him, betrayed. "Stefan..."
He leans down when Klaus isn't looking. "I won't let him hurt you," he whispers.
I knew he still cared.
I find myself actually smiling as we walk back to the bar.
***
I sit between Klaus and Stefan for 'safety measures'. Gloria gives a beer to both of them but eyes me suspiciously.
"Give the little one a beer," Klaus teases.
I groan as Gloria complies. She hands me a beer. I know I shouldn't be drinking, but I don't care. It's been a long enough day. I lean back and drink almost the entire glass.
"Where's Rebekah?" Gloria asks.
"She'll be here. I can't just conjure her," Klaus snaps.
Klaus looks over me, making eye contact with Stefan. "What's with you? I thought Chicago was your playground."
"So this is why you asked me to be your wingman? Because you liked the way I tortured innocent people?"
"That's certainly half of it."
"The other half is that you used to want to be my wingman."
Klaus raises his glass and it clinks with Stefan's. "To friendship."
He looks at me, our glasses touching. "And to love."
I look at him with pure hatred as he smirks, pushing his glass away. "Absolutely not."
Stefan looks over me again. "Why do I only know you as the hybrid who tried to sacrifice my girlfriend?"
"All good things must come to an end."
"You compelled me to forget?"
Klaus and Stefan... friends. It's hard to imagine.
"It was time for Rebekah and I to move on. Better to have a clean slate."
"But why? You shouldn't have to cover your tracks... unless you're running from someone."
"Storytime's over," Klaus interrupts.
"I need another drink. A real one."
Stefan gets up and leaves. Klaus and I are alone. I feel chills run down my body and I can also feel his eyes on me.
"Will you just let Stefan go?" I beg.
"That's no fun, love. Even your lovely face won't convince me. What could you possibly offer me in exchange for his freedom?"
"I'll do anything you want."
"While that sounds very appealing, I already have that." He leans in closer, his mouth close to my neck. "Because if you don't listen, I'll take a bite out of you."
I tremble and I feel his smirk. There's no winning with Klaus. He seems to always get whatever he wants.
"Ah, Damon."
I turn around and see my best friend.
