Lily
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Lily. Lily! Wake up!" I roll over to see my dad fully dressed, coffee cup in hand. I twist my head back around looking at the clock. It was 9:13. "Dad!" I moan sleepily. He pulls my blanket off of me as I try to put it over my head. "We have to go! You promised me you would help me today." he tells me. I was so confused right now. He see my unconvinced look and dramatically sighs. "The event. Catering tent?!" he tells me. It all clicks into place. He had asked me to help him run his tent at an event today. My dad was the owner of a semi successful business, selling roasted nuts. Lots of people in London love them, and they have grown to be popular. He had just opened his fifth shop. "Oh. Crap! Sorry dad!" I say, rolling out of bed. He laughs at me. "Go dad! I will be down in ten minutes." I tell him, signaling to the door.
He leaves me to get ready. I put on a pair of jeans and one of the company's shirts. I run to the bathroom, brushing my teeth and hair as fast as I can. I gather my phone from my room, grab my jacket, and slide my feet into my red Toms. When I run down the stairs my dad is waiting at the bottom with a bagel and coffee for me. "Ready love?" he asks. I grab the food from him and open the door. We leave our house, and drive the fifteen minutes it takes to get to the event.
"Football?" I ask my dad, eyeing the students waiting in line to get into the stands. He smiles. "Who knew that we could be branching out like this huh?!" he says excitedly. "Come on! We have to go meet Michelle with the trailer." he says, walking away from me. I follow him across the parking lot. There are lots of people here already, and the match doesn't even start for an hour. My dad and Michelle set up the tent, while I separate all the different flavors and kinds of nuts. We lay them out on the tables, and wait for all the fans to be let in. When they do, I'm actually surprised at how many people come straight to us. Within forty-five minutes of the gates opening, I had to go get more boxes from the trailer. My dad was absolutely thrilled with the response. When the game finally starts, everyone is going crazy. My dad is reorganizing the tables when he looks up at me. "Why don't you go watch a bit Lily?" he asks me. I was a little unsure, but tell him I will be back later.
Instead of sitting with the insane students, I sit on the parent side, minding my own business. My school is playing, and I look down at our team. They all have their white jerseys on, and are acting as crazy as they do at school.I can see George, Kegan, and Tom from my history class on the sidelines. We have the ball at the moment, and one of our boys is running at an extremely fast pace towards the goal. He takes a shot, sliding down into the grass, sending the ball right into the net. The spectators go wild. The scorer stands up, thrusting his fist into the air. Several of the boys attack him with hugs and handshakes. When they line up again, I see the back of the boys jersey. Tomlinson. It was Louis. I smile and shake my head. He really was good. After watching till the last quarter, I decide to go back to help my dad. When I climb down the stands and maneuver myself through the crowds to our tent, there are a bunch of people surrounding the table.
"Excuse me. Sorry. Excuse me." I mumble, pushing through the people. "Word got around!" my dad tells me, grinning as wide as possible. I stand with Michelle and help sell. When the game finally finished all the spectators had to walk by our tent to leave, so we got even more business. I had to make another two trips back to the trailer for more nuts. My school had won the game, so it was cool to see all the fans so excited. My dad lets out a breath, and leans on the table after everyone is gone. "This day couldn't have gone better!" he says.Michelle and him start to take down the tent while I go through and inventory all the nuts we have left.
I'm left alone when they take it to the trailer. I continue to put all the packages into the boxes, until I hear something slam down onto one of the tables. "Hey freak!" I turn and see George and Kegan standing at the table. The rest of the team is not far behind them. "Can't get your hands on any real nuts so this is what you settle for?" George snickers, eyeing the almonds in my hand. I shake my head and try to ignore them. "You know if you tried a little harder I think guys would be willing to give you a chance." Kegan tells me. "Yeah. Like maybe if you stopped being such a loner you could get some of these." George says, grabbing at his crotch.
I really didn't want to cry in front of these guys, and I was praying that my dad wouldn't come back while they were all here. By now the rest of the team has started to crowd around them, and are all laughing. "Uh oh! I think the freak is gonna cry!" one of them yells. "Oh poor baby! Do you want me to-" Kegan is cut off, when someone shoves him to the side.
"Really guys?! Why are you all so immature sometimes?!" It's Louis. Tyler is standing next to him as they stand in front of Kegan and George. "Why are you so concerned Lou! It's not like she is anything special." Kegan says. Louis grabs the front of his shirt and gets in his face. "Why don't we all just get on the bus before Loddi come out here and kills us all!" he says. The crowd of boys slowly starts to disappear.
"I'm sorry my teammates are so immature." Louis tells me, turning around. I nod, not trusting my voice. George shakes his head behind him. "Who knew the Tommo could be such a sap." he says walking away with Kegan. Tyler and Louis still stand there. "Would it be to late to get some almonds?" Louis asks me. I stand up and walk to the table. "Three pounds right?" he asks. I pass over the almonds to him. "Don't worry about the money. Thanks for getting them away." I say quietly. He shakes his head. "No. I insist on paying." He tries to hand me the money but I grab his hand. "Really Louis. It's fine. Now go before you miss your bus." I tell him. The whole time I was talking to Louis, Tyler was looking back and forth between us. "See you on Monday." Louis says quietly, and then walks away with Tyler.
I close my eyes and let out a shaky breath. I really wish I had my headphones right now. "Sorry we took so long! The tent decided to fall out of the bag while we were putting it in the trailer." my dad says, returning our spot. I finish up the last couple of packages, putting them in the boxes. I hand my dad the clipboard with all the inventory. "Are you alright dear?" he asks me. "Fine." I say, picking up a few boxes and walking towards the trailer.
