"What the hell was that?!" Tyler shouts, blocking my way onto the bus. "What? Me helping out a girl who was being bullied. Why is that such a bad thing?" I ask him. He shakes his head. "I feel like I don't know you sometimes Lou." he says quietly. I push past him onto the bus. All the other guys are already shouting and being crazy. I just wasn't in the mood today. I sit in the first seat and wait for Tyler to sit with me. He sits with me a couple minutes later, followed on the bus by coach Loddi. "Good match today boys! I think our season is going to be great!" he tells the team. All the boys shout and chant in agreement.
I plug my earphones into my phone hoping to get some peace. But Tyler stops me. "Why her?" he asks. I look at him. "What do you mean?" I ask him, totally confused at what he is getting at. "Why out of all the girls in our school, are you eyeing the outcast smart girl?" he asks blatantly. I feel like my eyes are going to bulge out of my head. "Why does it matter? I don't like her like that! I just don't feel it's right to be a bully to someone you don't know anything about. Why is it so bad to be friendly?" I tell him. He laughs a bit. "Touché." he says. I put my music on and try to block out the craziness of the bus. I had a feeling that Tyler wasn't really convinced with my explantation, but I chose not to confront it.
We get back to school, and I decide to walk home. I didn't want to bother my mom with having to come get me. Plus it gave me more alone time. I take the long way, circling to one of the side streets of small shops. A lot of the cafes are busy with people eating lunch. People are shopping and being happy together. I walk past a small alley and hear a shriek. "Ugh!" someone says, after something hits the ground. I peek my head back around the corner. Lily stands there with a couple boxes spilled around her feet. She gets down on her knees and starts to collect the spilled packages of nuts. "Need help?" I ask, walking towards her. She jumps, and looks up at me. I lean down next to her and grab some of the packages. "Where did you come from?" she asks quietly. I laugh. "I'm stalking you actually." I tell her jokingly. She looks at me completely in shock. "I'm just joking!" I tell her. She relaxes and continues to put the nuts back in the boxes. Once we are done I put my bag down and pick up the boxes. "I can get them." she says. "It's fine. I don't mind helping." I tell her. She looks unsure, but opens the door behind her. She lead me inside and shows me where to place the boxes.
"Who's this?" a man asks, walking up to me and Lily. "Dad. This is Louis. He goes to school with me. And he's on the football team." Lily tells the man. He shakes my hand. "Pleased to meet you! Thanks for helping my daughter." he says. "My pleasure sir." I reply. Lily looks uncomfortable with this whole situation. "Uh. I better get going." I tell Lily more than her dad. She nods. "Good meeting you sir. Love your nuts by the way." As soon as I say it, I instantly regret it. It sounded so awkward. Lily starts to giggle a bit, but her dad doesn't seemed fazed by my comment. "Well come by anytime you want some!" he tells me.
I try as hard as I can not to laugh as Lily takes me back outside. As we get back into the alley, I can't hold it in any longer. I burst out laughing and so does Lily. I lean against the wall trying to catch my breath. "I feel like an idiot!" I tell her. "Don't. He loves it when people compliment his nuts!" she says laughing even harder. I stare at her laughing. It was interesting to see her so loud and so unlike she is at school. She slowly stops laughing and looks at me. "Why aren't you at home? I mean, aren't you exhausted?" she asks me. I sigh. "I decided to walk home. The boys are really annoying after awhile. And today was bad, but we had a good game so that's all that matters really." I tell her honestly. She smiles at me. "You're not like all of them. I'm still trying to figure it out." she says. I smile and nod my head. "I'm really glad I'm not like all of them. And speaking if being different, you're not the same as every other girl at our school. I'm still trying to figure THAT out." I tell her. She laughs. "I think that's the best compliment I have ever gotten from a genuine guy." she says quietly. She starts to gather boxes again. "See ya later." she says, trying to get back inside.
I step in front of her, cutting her off. "You think I'm a genuine guy?" I ask her. I can't help but let a grin take over my face. She looks like she doesn't know what to say. "I uh. Umm you're just... Can you.. I uhh. Umm." she stutters nervously. I laugh and move out of her way, holding the door open for her. "Thanks." she mumbles. I laugh again and grab my bag, starting to walk home again.
I make it about one store away, when I hear my name. I turn around. Lily jogs up to me. She throws me a bunch of nuts. I drop a few and pick them up."My dad insisted on giving you one of each." she says, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Thanks love!" I say. She instantly blushes. "See you on Monday." she tells me, turning around. We head on our separate ways. I turn again, to see her head peeked around the corner of the alley way. Her eyes widen when she sees she has been caught. I give her a wink and continue walking. Lily really was a mystery that I wanted to know more about.
When I get home finally, I catch my mom coming down the stairs. "Louis baby! Where have you been?" she asks, running over to me. I laugh and kiss her cheek. "I was helping a friend I saw on the way. She had dropped some stuff so I helped her get it." I tell her. She wriggles her eye brows at me. "She?!" she asks. I groan and start up the stairs. "Where are the girls?" I ask her. She looks up at me. "Your avoiding the topic of this mystery girl." she says, walking away. I huff and put my stuff in my room. I strip off my t-shirt and head to the bathroom.
"How was your match?" I hear Lottie ask me. She is leaning against her door. "It was great. We won. I scored five points this time. How are you feeling today?" I ask her. She shrugs. "It's been a blah kind of day." she tells me. I laugh. "I will come see you when I'm done in the shower." I tell her.
I quickly wash up, enjoying the hot water after my long morning. I get out and go back to my room and pull on some sweats and a clean t-shirt. I run my fingers through my hair and walk over to Lottie's room. I knock quietly.
"Come in." she says through the wood.I go in and sit down on her bed. She is at her desk browsing Twitter on her laptop. She turns herself towards me. "Hey." she says, smiling. "Hey." I reply. We sit quietly for a few seconds. "Umm Lottie, can I ask you something? But you have to promise you're gonna be honest with me." I tell her. She pulls her legs up sitting cross cross in her chair. "Spill it!" she says excitedly. I take a deep breath. "Say there is this girl I want to get to know. We aren't that close, but I really want to be. What would be a good way to get her to talk to me?" I ask. She has a huge grin on her face. "Well... I would say make sure she can trust you. If you open up to her she will open up to you." she tells me. I nod. That could work. "Who is she?" Lottie asks mischievously. I look up at her. "Her name is Lily. I don't know her very well but I can't help but feel like I want to. She is quiet, very pretty, and she is extremely smart." I say with a smile. Lottie claps her hands and squeals. "Awe Lou! I want to meet her sometime!" she says. I laugh. "Like I said. I don't know her very well right now. But thanks for the advice." I say, getting up. I make my way out, but right before I shut the door I peek back in.
"Don't tell mom yet!" I warn her. Lottie just laughs and goes back to her laptop.
