Monday Morning
Monday mornings are always the most boring at the office for everyone, but for a workaholic like me, they're pure heaven. It's the most efficient day as well. I plan my whole week ahead and can lose myself in work until it's time to go home.
Today was going the same way when suddenly there was a knock on my door.
"Come in," I shouted from my seat. Hailey poked her head in and said, "Someone wants to meet you."
"Do I have any meetings I'm forgetting?" I asked Hailey.
"Nope, but the guy is pretty persistent, so you should probably meet him," Hailey said with a look in her eye I couldn't decipher.
"Okay, send him in," I said. Someone cleared their throat behind Hailey. She opened the door to reveal the blue-eyed Rock. I don't know how he manages to look this hot every time I see him.
Today he was wearing a plain gray T-shirt with dark blue-tinted denim jeans.
"Holy freaking damn," I blurted out.
Hailey's smile widened, and Rock's face showed a hint of dimples.
"Later, boss," Hailey said, giving me a little wave and leaving me alone with Rock.
Rock sauntered into my room and sat down in the chair in front of me, now fully smiling.
"Hey there, Squirrel," he said.
"Squirrel?" I squeaked. Well done, Sadie.
"Yup, whenever I see you, you get this look like you're ready to run, so Squirrel seems like a fitting name."
"Really? From what I remember, you were the one running away yesterday when I mentioned the 'period party,'" I said confidently. I don't know where this newfound confidence came from.
"About that," Rock said, "I talked to Art, and guess what? She told me there was no period party yesterday. So, were you trying to get rid of me?"
The blood drained from my face. I literally stopped breathing, and my heartbeat skyrocketed. The first thing that came out of my mouth was, "Uh, I think I forgot to change my tampons. So, I'll just go... change them?"
I have no idea where that came from or why it came out as a question. I don't even use tampons; I'm a pad person. Maybe it was panic, or maybe I'm just a dumb piece of shit who deserves this embarrassment.
"I'm letting you run away for now," Rock said, "but I'm also letting you know, whatever this is between us isn't over. So be ready for our date this Saturday." He looked determined as he said this.
I opened my mouth to answer, but nothing came out. Great! So now's the time to freeze. Thanks a lot, brain, you son of a bitch.
"See you then, my Squirrel," he said, standing up and leaving. I stared blankly at the chair where he had just been sitting a few minutes ago.
Wednesday Evening
"So you told him that you forgot to change your tampon!" Art shrieked, doubled over with laughter. Hailey was sprawled on the floor, wiping tears from her eyes.
"That was the only excuse I remembered!" I shouted back, mortified.
It was Wednesday evening, and Hailey and Art had shown up at my house unannounced, a bottle of wine in hand. After Rock left my office Monday morning, I'd tried avoiding them both, but even I knew it was only a matter of time.
"You know, your excuse kind of sucks," Hailey said, still giggling.
"I know, that's why I'm going mute next time," I muttered.
"So there is going to be a next time?" Art teased.
"He did say something about a date on Saturday," Hailey replied.
"So what should she wear?" Art asked, turning to Hailey.
"Something classic, like a black dress," Hailey suggested.
"But he didn't tell her where he's taking her," Art countered. "Maybe something versatile, like jeans and a crop top?"
"Yeah, something that shows off her curves," Hailey agreed with a wink.
"Guys, I'm right here," I reminded them. "Why don't you ask me if I'm even going on that date?"
"Of course you are!" Art declared. "And Hailey and I are going shopping to find you the perfect outfit."
"First of all, I'm not going on any date," I said stubbornly. "Second, you can't buy me clothes. You don't know my size."
"We'll see about that," Art said with a sly grin. "And I'll buy clothes in my size!"
"But you're two sizes smaller than me!" I protested.
"Then the tighter, the better," Art shot back, her smirk hinting at some mischievous plan.
We dropped the topic and moved on to Hailey's love life, or lack thereof. There was this guy she was seeing who gave her mixed signals. One day he'd show up at work with roses, the next he wouldn't return her calls. He'd even crashed our girls' night out for dinner, then vanished for two weeks.
The guy was giving us whiplash, but Hailey had developed feelings for him. Despite our warnings, she clung to the hope that he might be a good guy.
"You guys just don't know him the way I do," Hailey insisted. "He's so attentive! Every time we meet, he asks about my work and life. And he doesn't just ask to be polite - he listens and remembers the details. It feels like he really cares."
"I don't know, Hails," Art said, swirling her wine in the glass. "This guy gives me a bad vibe."
"Maybe you should meet him again," Hailey suggested. "Just yesterday, he was asking about you both, wanting to know if you were okay. He cares about the people I love, too."
While I agreed with Art's skepticism, I didn't want to burst Hailey's bubble.
"Hails, all we want is your happiness," I said gently. "If this guy makes you happy, then we'll definitely give him a chance."
Art seemed to want to add something, but I shot her a warning look. We weren't going to argue about this tonight.
After that intense conversation, we settled in to watch a movie. Hailey and Art ended up staying at my house as they are too drunk to drive home and I already got this big ass home with two other bedrooms.
Heyy guys! suggest some good ideas for the date.
