I was continuously re-adjusting myself in the chair but it was damn so uncomfortable. It took her a minute before she turned towards me, holding a tissue in her hand while drying her hands. A bright smile reached her eyes, making her look even more radiant under the harsh fluorescent lights.
But the moment her eyes landed on me, she stood frozen. Her smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of utter shock. The tissue fell from her hand, fluttering to the ground like a fallen leaf. I stood up from my place, feeling a sudden rush of adrenaline, and faced her.
"What. Are. You. Doing. Here?" she asked
Earlier that day...
"Hey! Is she available today?", I enquired the receptionist
It's my fourth time asking for Lisa in one month. I don't know why but I need to see her.
"She's on a round. Would you like to wait or should I schedule your appointment for later?", the lady in her late fifties responded while looking at her computer screen. If it weren't for Lisa, I would've done something lethal to this woman. "I'll wait for her until she....", I tried to be nice, but this woman sure was at the edge of somewhere that would definitely won't be this world.
"Token number 17. Here! You can wait in the main waiting area." " she interrupted with her annoying face while pushing a white, square-shaped paper with a bold, black 17 written on it. I managed to control my urge to wrap my hands around her throat only to see her dead, but all I did was move towards the waiting area. I sat right outside Lisa's room to be assured of her presence. In actuality, I wanted to see her after all these years. I wanted to have a good look at her and how she's been without getting to be on her notice. I'm not even sure what I'll be saying to her since I barely remember anything that has happened in the last ten years after I had an accident almost a year ago. I don't remember anything about her. How did we meet? Or what type of relationship we had, or does she even recognize me? I have so many questions to seek answers for. She's been constantly on my mind ever since I woke up after my accident. I kept on pushing my mind to memorize the face I'd been having flashbacks about, but I couldn't recognize her and it was only putting me on the edge of anger and irritability. Six weeks ago, I was scrolling through my LinkedIn when I saw her name. The post was like all other posts on LinkedIn that were regarding job updates. The post caught my eye as it mentioned her current job update, working at Chicago Hospital as a pediatrician five months ago. "Five months ago! Is this feed even the latest!", I murmured to myself until I realized how fate aligns things. The name did not influence me until my eyes landed on the profile picture. I clicked it instantly. When I zoomed in the picture, it was the same face I'd been seeing after my accident. I ran straight towards the Chicago hospital that day for the first time without knowing what I was going to do next. I rushed towards the reception and found that she had been in an emergency. I waited for five whole hours and still, there was no sign of her. I wanted to wait until I saw her but I had to leave since I received a call from Liam, my business partner and my childhood friend regarding a meeting we had. Liam's been with me throughout everything; before and after my accident and lost my fucking memory. Fortunately, he's not familiar with what my mind's been caught up with because I barely share my personal life with anyone so his knowing Lisa wasn't even a possibility. I didn't mention where I was and left immediately for the meeting. Liam's been helping me keep up with almost every aspect of life except for my relationships. The next time I came to see her, she had to leave early due to some personal errands. The more I have to wait, the more impatient I'm becoming. The last time when I visited the hospital, the receptionist told me that Lisa was out of town for some medical training that was supposed to last two weeks. Every time I went back without seeing her, the intensity of my impatience grew stronger and stronger. And stronger than it was the last time.
Liam's call brought me back to the waiting area where I'd been sitting for the past forty minutes.
"Yes, Liam? All good?", I enquired
"Where are you, man?", Liam asked
"I thought this would be important", I snapped
"You've been doing God knows what, barely giving attention to the business that took us almost two decades to be at the point it is now. No one at your house or work knows where you are and you think this isn't important! If this isn't important, Enzo, then please tell me what it's supposed to be. We were not able to see you or hear you talk for months and now you expect us to pretend like nothing happened! Do you even realize what we've been through!", Liam protested
I've never seen him this frustrated
"I'm sorry! I know how you all feel about my accident, but I need you to trust me. I'm already a lost cause and I'm trying to find myself.", I confessed
"Can you at least tell me what are you up to?", Liam questioned
"I will, but let me figure this all out on my own first", I replied
"Take care, buddy. We've almost lost you once and we can't let that happen again. And I mean it!", Liam confessed and hung up the call
I went to the reception again to ask about Lisa, but it was useless. It might take her another hour before she comes back to her cabin. I went to the coffee shop outside to grab a cup of espresso but ended up buying a latte, which I had never had since college. Life's been quite unpredictable these days. I make choices that I've never made before and I feel like this isn't me. Something is going on inside me. I'm fighting a battle within myself and I'm not sure how it's gonna end.
