Sunset Valley, California, USA

6:30 AM

A news van with the logo "GNN: Truth Worldwide" screeched to a halt, its arrival barely noticeable amid the din cacophony surrounding the Sunset Vista Hospital.

Crowds, a mixture of grieving families, concerned citizens, and gawkers, surged against the flimsy police barricades.

Their shouts and wails were punctuated by the sharp barks of police officers struggling to maintain some semblance of order.

Nadia Khan emerged from the passenger side of the van.

Dressed in her signature work attire - dark cargo pants tucked into combat boots, a grey button - down shirt straining against her athletic build, and a worn leather jacket pulled tight against the biting cold wind.

She surveyed the scene with a mixture of apprehension and determination.

Her hazel eyes usually glinting with what her coworkers called "mischievous," were narrowed with a dawning sense of fear.

She hurried over around the crowd and conversated with the police.

Her cameraman Alex steadied his camera, typing on the blue holographic screen showing it linking up to their news station.

While he prepares to capture the scene behind him, his eyes glanced over to Nadia and notices her face in pure shock, her hands clasped over her mouth, a tear slowly streaming down.

He gets up quickly running to her aid. His ears pick up her words:

"Nearly half the staff dead,"

Alex's eyes widened as he stood there next to Nadia.

He had heard rumors online about the incident but the toll was much higher than they were lead to believe.

"W-Wait, half the staff....and the patients too?" she murmured, her voice barely audible over the din.

Her stomach lurched at the police reports she'd just received.

A wave of nausea washed over her. Fear, cold and metallic, gripped her heart.

This was different. This wasn't a political scandal or a corporate cover-up.

This was raw, unadulterated tragedy, and the weight of reporting it threatened to crush her.

Before she could succumb to the panic rising in her throat, Alex settled his hand on Nadia's shoulder.

His expression a mixture of concern and determination.

He wasn't tall, but his build was solid, and his brown eyes held a quiet strength that Nadia had come to rely on in countless tense situations.

"Hey," he said softly, his voice carrying an undercurrent of reassurance.

"You okay?"
