We drove for hours, the silence in the car deafening. Carl's eyes were fixed on me, his small face etched with worry.
Shane's gaze kept darting to the rearview mirror, his jaw clenched in tension.
I stared out the window, my mind numb. Rick was gone I'm never gonna see him again that thought echoed in my brain like a cruel mantra.
I couldn't bear to think about it, but I couldn't escape it either.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the deserted landscape, Shane finally spoke up.
"Aurora, we need to go to the highway" he said but I just nodded, still feeling dazed.
"I promise I will keep you and Carl safe" he said but I didn't say anything.
I glanced at Carl, who was watching me with wide eyes. I forced a smile, trying to reassure him. "It's okay, baby. We'll be okay."
But as we drove deeper into the unknown, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were heading into a nightmare from which we might never awaken.
We hit the highway, joining a sea of cars crawling along like ants on a congested trail. Shane's eyes narrowed, his grip on the steering wheel tightening.
"What's going on?" I asked, my voice laced with frustration.
"Traffic," Shane muttered. "We need to get out of here."
But it was too late. The cars ahead of us came to a standstill, trapping us in a maze of metal and glass. I groaned, feeling a sense of desperation creeping in.
Carl looked up at me, his eyes wide with worry. "Mommy, what's happening?"
I forced a reassuring smile and looked at him. "It's okay, baby. We're just stuck in traffic."
But as the minutes ticked by, the tension in the car grew. Shane's face was set in a grim mask, his eyes scanning the surrounding cars as if searching for an escape route.
I glanced around, feeling a sense of unease. We were trapped, vulnerable to whatever dangers lurked outside.
As the minutes ticked by, our frustration grew. We decided to get out of the car and see if we could gather any information from the other stranded drivers.
Shane went to talk to the guy with a woman and a little girl who we found out their names are Ed, Carol and Sophia.
"Hey, do you know what's going on?" Shane asked a man standing beside his car. The man just shook his head and said.
"No, I've been stuck here for hours. I've heard rumors of a military operation gone wrong, but I don't know what to believe." The man said.
We continued to ask around, but no one seemed to have any concrete information. As we walked back to our car, I noticed a small path leading into the woods.
"Shane, look," I said, nodding towards the path.
"Let's go see if we can get a better view of what's going on let's see if Carol can watch Carl."
Shane hesitated for a moment, then he followed me into the woods. We climbed up a small hill, and what we saw made our blood run cold.
In the distance, a helicopter was flying low over the city of Atlanta, dropping bombs and firing missiles. The city was in chaos, with buildings burning and smoke billowing into the sky.
"Oh my god," I whispered, my hand covering my mouth in horror.
"What are they doing? *Crying* Shane?" He grabbed me and pulled me to him.
Shane's face was grim. "I don't know, but we need to get out of here Now."
We turned and ran back down the hill, our hearts racing with fear. We knew we had to get as far away from the city as possible, and fast.
