Chapter 1: She's Gone

Midnight laid depressed in bed. He couldn't deal with himself after he lost his beloved girlfriend, Lilith, so he started shutting himself out and playing video games.

As Midnight gamed, he thought of all the adventures he and Lilith had. Back then, before they had started dating, Lilith was a notorious criminal, fending for herself out in the streets, much like Midnight trying to survive after he broke out of the lab where he was being experimented on. However, Lilith did it so well that when Midnight literally bumped into her, he was starstruck by her, her skills, and her attitude. Shortly after meeting her, they fell in love and it wasn't too long after that they went on heists together. Eventually Lilith's bubbly personality and crazy attitude smoothed out Midnight's quiet and reserved personality. Similarly, Midnight's personality calmed Lilith down and the two began to fall away from their criminal lives. Those days were Midnight's best and memorable treasures.

"Snap out of it, man," Midnight thought to himself, shaking his head and slapping himself in the face. He decides to take a break from gaming and go for a walk to clear his mind. While he was out and about, a game store with a BETA TESTER FOR HIRE sign caught his eye.

"F*ck it," he thought to himself. He walked in and inquired with the store owner. He applied as soon as possible and, thankfully, was accepted as one of the new beta testers.

"Hey, son," the store owner greeted as soon as Midnight walked in the next day for his first day at his new job. They walked to the very back of the store, where they did all of the beta testing of newly released games. "Are ya ready?"

"Sure," Midnight said, nonchalantly.

"The game you're going to test for us is called Cyberpunk Discord," the store owner said, grabbing a headset from one of the shelves. "Let's get you suited up."

"Wait, is it alright if I read the description first?" Midnight asked.

"Sure thing, son," the store owner said. He handed the game to Midnight.

"Interesting...well, whatever," Midnight thought to himself.

"Did it pique your interest?" The store owner asked, walking over to Midnight, headset in hand.

"Ehh...we'll see how it goes," Midnight answered as he took the headset from the store owner and put it on, carefully hiding his ears. "Launch it."

As soon as it was launched, Midnight's consciousness was transferred into the game and he collapsed onto the floor of the store.

The store owner gasped, concerned for Midnight. "Quick, call an ambulance!" He orders as he rushed to Midnight, who now laid unconscious on the floor. "Turn the game off!" The store owner ordered another employee. The employee rushed to turn off the game and unplug Midnight.

"Sir...it won't turn off..." the employee said nervously.

"Dammit..." the store owner muttered. "I guess we'll just have to look after him in the meantime."
