~Narrator's pov~
The sudden disappearance of the mayor is currently the talk of the town in the country. No one knows where he is, not even his lawyers have any idea. There is a theory circulating that he may have left the country and returned to China, but the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) has stated that there is no record of Alice Leal Guo or Guo Hua ping leaving the country. After several days, it was reported that the former mayor of Bamban, Tarlac has passed away. They are in disbelief over the sudden passing of the mayor, even the four who allegedly abducted Alice were shocked by the news, they never thought it would end up like this for the mayor.
Mayor Donya's POV
The crisp air of Sunday morning was a welcome change from the usual cacophony of my town. The scent of pine needles and damp earth filled my lungs, a soothing balm after a week of relentless demands and public scrutiny. I needed this escape, this quiet communion with nature, to ground myself. The constant whispers, the accusations, the relentless pursuit of the truth, it all felt like a relentless storm, threatening to drown me.
But today, my peaceful hike was interrupted. I stumbled upon a woman lying unconscious on the forest floor. Her face, even in its dazed state, was familiar. It was Alice, the former mayor of Bamban, the woman who had disappeared under such mysterious circumstances.
Panic surged through me, but I quickly regained my composure. I called my driver, my voice trembling slightly, and instructed him to meet me at the trailhead. Together, we carried Alice to my car, her limp body a stark contrast to the vibrant green of the forest.
As we arrived at my home, Alice stirred, her eyes opening slowly. She was disoriented, her gaze vacant, unable to recall the events that led to her collapse. I gently explained everything to her, her identity, the reason for her disappearance, the current situation. I spoke softly, trying to ease her back into reality, but her eyes remained clouded with confusion.
"Alice, it's me, Donya," I said, my voice soft, reassuring. "You're safe now."
But as I finished recounting the events, her eyes welled up, tears streaming down her cheeks. She looked at me, her gaze filled with a mixture of fear and recognition.
"I... I remember everything now," she stammered, her voice trembling.
"Alice, I'm so sorry. I know you're traumatized, but you need to remember who you are," I said, a pang of guilt twisting in my stomach. I knew the events that had led to her disappearance, the accusations that had followed her, the fear that had consumed her. I felt a deep sense of responsibility for her well-being, a burden I had not anticipated.
"No, it's not your fault," she replied, her voice soft but firm. "It's all my fault."
"Alice, please," I pleaded, my heart aching for her. "You need to rest. We'll figure this out together."
I led her to a guest room, a sanctuary away from the scrutiny of the public eye. We both needed time to process everything, to find a semblance of peace amidst the chaos.
Narrator's POV
The town was still reeling from the shock of the mayor's death. Even though she was gone, the whispers about her past, the mysteries surrounding her life, continued to echo through the streets. The senators, determined to unravel the truth, continued their investigation, ignoring the public outcry. "She's gone, let her rest," some cried. "Why are you digging up her past?" others lamented. But the senators were relentless, driven by a thirst for justice, a need to understand the enigma that was Alice. They were determined to uncover the secrets that had been buried with her.
Weeks turned into months, and Mayor Donya, now simply known as Don, found herself caring for Alice. She had discovered that Alice was pregnant, a secret that had been hidden even from her closest confidantes. Don, with a fierce maternal instinct, took it upon herself to provide Alice with the care and support she needed. She had become a mother figure to Alice, a beacon of hope in a world that seemed determined to cast her in darkness.
Time flew by, and Alice gave birth. The joy of new life was overshadowed by tragedy. Alice, weakened from the delivery, slipped into unconsciousness. She never got to hold her daughter, to see her tiny face, to feel the overwhelming love that comes with motherhood.
Don, with a heavy heart, made a decision. She knew Alice's past, the accusations, the fear that would follow her daughter. She couldn't let the child be a pawn in the ongoing drama. She knew the senators wouldn't hesitate to use the child as leverage, to further their investigation, to exploit the vulnerability of an innocent life. The moment Alice gave birth, Don discreetly gave the baby to someone she barely knew, a woman who had offered to help, a woman who promised to protect the child from the storm that raged around them.
When Alice finally awoke, she searched for her child, only to be met with the crushing news that her baby had not survived. Tears streamed down her face, a torrent of grief and despair. Why was this happening to her? She just wanted to be loved, to have a normal life. She wasn't a monster, not the villain they painted her to be. She yearned for the simple joys of family, of a life free from the shadows that haunted her. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Alice, trapped in a cruel game, was left to grapple with the unbearable weight of her past, her future shrouded in uncertainty. The truth, like a phantom, continued to elude her, leaving her lost in a labyrinth of secrets and lies.
Don, burdened by the weight of her own decisions, watched over Alice, her heart heavy with a mixture of empathy and guilt. She had made a choice, a choice that had saved a life but had also shattered another. She had become entangled in a web of secrets, a web that threatened to consume her. The truth, she knew, was a dangerous thing, a force that could shatter lives and leave behind a trail of destruction. And she was determined to protect Alice, to shield her from the storm that raged around them, even if it meant sacrificing her own peace of mind.
The town, oblivious to the secrets that lay hidden beneath the surface, continued to gossip, to speculate, to judge. But Don knew the truth. She knew the burden Alice carried, the pain she endured. And she vowed to stand by her, to be her anchor in the storm, to protect her from the world that sought to destroy her. The truth, she realized, was a burden she was willing to bear, a burden she was willing to carry for the woman who had become her responsibility, her friend, her sister. The truth, she knew, would eventually surface, but until then, she would be Alice's shield, her protector, her confidante. She would be her strength, her solace, her hope.
