Scurvy was running fast through the woods. It was coming on sundown and he didn't want to be late. There was a special dinner that Sophie needed to attend and she insisted on him coming along. He didn't really want to go, because Sophie's older sister Amelia was giving the party and he didn't really care for her. Amelia had married several years before, and her husband Ethan Bordon was a decent sort, but the two wasn't in anyway close. He tried to decline the invitation, but when it came to Sophie Scurvy couldn't deny her anything.
The truth was is that he was in love with her and had been for years, but he could never tell her how he felt. He was in no way the shy type, but for him there was one major problem. He was a dog, but more specifically a Sadian dog-ware, which meant that he had the ability to transform into a werewolf.
Sophie was a Sadian human, and even though she was like no other human he ever met it was the one thing that was keeping them apart. All his life he had been proud to be born into the Wolf Clan and reveled in his abilities, but when he met Sophie his only wish was to be human.
He met Sophie when she was a mere child and always took it upon himself to be her protector, and as she grew older his feelings for her grew. Sometimes he wished they would just disappear, but they weren't going away. He even thought of taking off and leaving Sophie forever, but the thought of not seeing her every day was too much for him to bear. He was forced to live with the torturous feelings he had for someone he could never be with.
He came upon a long path that led to a large estate. Amelia, Sophie's sister, always had lavish taste. Many times when they were traveling on the ship Amelia would the first to complain. If it wasn't about the limited living space it was about the sea sickness, or the conditions of the deck or the crudeness of the crew. Sophie never complained. She loved being out on the water and took it all in as a new adventure. One of the things that Scurvy loved about Sophie was that she could adapt to any situation, and she had no fear.
Every thought he had kept going back to her, his beautiful Sophie. He was several feet away when he saw her sitting on the long winding porch with her sister. They were drinking tea, but there was a seriousness in her expression. He was worried that something was wrong. He stayed hidden behind some shrubbery and listened in on the conversation.
"Sophie, is something wrong?" Amelia asked as she took a sip from her cup of tea. "Please, tell me."
"Nothing is wrong," she said, but something in her voice said that she was obviously lying. She tried to lighten her mood with an awkward smile. "I'm just worried about the party. I don't want to make a fool of myself and trip into something and embarrass you."
"Would you stop worrying?" Amelia said and put her tea cup on the little table. "You're not the unruly little girl I grew up with who acted more like a boy than a girl."
Sophie looked shocked that her sister would say such a thing. "I wasn't that bad, and besides, you were the one who took every spare moment to torture me."
"Well, that's just what big sisters do," Amelia said and picked up a tea cake and took a small bite. Then she looked over at her sister and moved the plate of goodies closer to her. "Here, have one."
"No, I'm not hungry," Sophie said, which almost made Amelia choke. It wasn't like her to turn down food, especially sweets.
"Sophie, are you sick?" Amelia asked. "It has always been my impression that these are your favorite." She pointed to a chocolate mint roll that was lying at the top of the pile.
"No, I'm not sick," Sophie insisted and stood up. She walked over to the railing and leaned her hands up against it, looking out at the woods. "There was a sad small smile on her face. "I'm just..." Her words trailed off.
At that moment Amelia stood up and gasped. "Oh my, I know what it is." Sophie turned quickly and had a confused look on her face. "It's obvious. I can see all the symptoms. I know because it happened to me, the first time I laid eyes on Ethan."
"What are you trying to say?" Sophie asked her accusingly.
"My baby sister is in love," Amelia said with a look of satisfaction on her face.
"Amelia, that is ridiculous," Sophie shouted out defensively.
"Be truthful, Sophie," Amelia said and took her sister's hand. "Come and tell big sister all about it."
"I can't, because it's never going to happen," Sophie said, obviously upset. "You're right. I am in love with someone, but the truth is we can never be together."
"And why not?" Amelia asked. "What is he, a rich dignitary?" Sophie rolled her eyes, which made Amelia laugh. "It's Oliver French, isn't it?" Sophie now looked shocked. "Well, I'm just going to have a talk with him. If he thinks my sister isn't good enough..."
"It's not Oliver," Sophie said and grabbed her sister's arm. She would go on these matchmaking rants, and Sophie wasn't the type to be forced into a courtship by someone else, especially Amelia.
"Then who is it?" Amelia asked but didn't really point the question at Sophie. "Oh, I know. It's Grant Salvador. Oh, Sophie, he is so handsome, and his manners are impeccable, and he's filthy rich..."
"Stop it!" Sophie shouted. "It's not anyone.... human." Amelia was somehow rendered speechless. "It's Scurvy." Her voice was silent, almost a whisper, and she saw her sister's face go pale like she was about to faint. Amelia sat down in her chair and tried to collect herself.
"Oh, Sophie, please tell me you're not serious," she said but Sophie didn't say anything. She just stood there silent like a small child who had been caught doing something naughty. "He's a dog."
"No, he's not just a dog. He's a brave and honorable werewolf, and sometimes I wish... I wish I were one too. Then we could be together, but right now... It's just impossible." Sophie ran off into the house with Amelia tailing after her.
Scurvy remained in his hiding place wondering if what Sophie said was true.
To be Continued...
Well, that's the end of this scene. This is just beginning, so I hope everyone likes it and I know this is kind of a twisted story, but it's something that has been in my head for a long time so I will be updating periodically for anyone who is interested.
