The Time Variance Authority (otherwise known as the TVA) dooms hundreds of millions of time criminals (also known as variants) to a cruel fate on the fringes of reality: a pocket in time known as 'the Void'. It is bleak. It is hopeless. It is populated by the only type of variant with an instinct of self-preservation strong enough to keep them alive: Lokis.
Among them is Variant 1313. Claiming to be one of the only female Loki variants, apart from the ruthless time criminal known as Sylvie Laufeydottir, Thirteen survives the darkness of the Void in Kid Loki's clan. She does whatever she needs to do to survive: scavenge for food, not get eaten by Alioth, and avoid President Loki's ruthless variants. Nothing new happens in the Void. Not for a very long time.
Not until a different type of Loki variant shows up. One that seems different from the rest, who is determined to help Sylvie bring down the TVA once and for all. He brings with him a glimmer of the hope that Thirteen had once lost - for she, too, seeks out Sylvie - and she decides that she will do anything that she needs to do to help him.
It is only after spending more time together that Loki starts to see something peculiar about this other female variant: not only intelligent, she is kind; not only ambitious, she is empathetic. There is even something about her that might seem to suggest that she isn't a "Loki" at all. . . But then. . . who is she?
