Nothing on her skin seemed free of flaws.

It was always covered in scratches, grazes and scars. Or a layer of dust and dirt. Some days she'd get home, scrub herself clean and yet the surface of her skin wouldn't feel cleaned at all. The redness and bleeding could go away, but not the nasty, rotting core on the inside.

"I'm sorry," She muttered. "I've been wanting to say for a while..."

"I know."

She let out a sigh, shutting her eyes while the dreadful argument they had floated up to the surface. It couldn't be even called an argument, just words being thrown to upset each other. Words that picked apart at their conscience. Ever since then, a weird, tense air clung around them. It wasn't about the fact about being right, it was the fear of making everything worse.

"Everything I said was just...immature. I didn't want to get disappointed and just put it on you," Seraphina explained, opening her eyes. Each word she spoke felt like a terrible, pathetic confession. "You are right. We still have a chance. We can get out Ashley back and come out of here, if Luis can fulfill his promise."

Leon nodded. "I'm sorry too. We don't have to dwell on it."

For her, the disagreement they had settled into the depths of her heart. It wasn't going to stop anything. Not anything between them, or the mission to save Ashley and get her safely back home. Doubt would always sprout in the crevices, an ugly feeling that wouldn't go away. So be it...she would have to get through. With Leon's help, the road back home didn't seem so difficult.

"I saw a lot of things when we came to rescue Ashley," Seraphina began to explain, her voice trembling. "It's like they decided to slaughter everyone but me. I just wondered...why me?"

Ever since he asked, she hadn't opened up about what happened before Leon arrived. The memories slowly trickled back in, replaying all over again. Memories that were better off forgotten.

"I was nothing special, but they saw me as the perfect target. A Guinea pig."

"That was...when you got injected with the parasite?" He asked, careful with his words.

Seraphina nodded, her eyes darting back down to the floor. Blood smeared across her cheeks. The stench of death. When the rest of the team had been killed, it was her worst fear. Even as a medic, she had been completely useless. No patch or bandage could fix fatal wounds, a decapitated head or a torn body.

"I know it's hard, but none of that was your fault."

"I'll try to think that." Seraphina muttered, giving him a forced smile.

"Ready to go?" He asked, standing up to hold out a hand for her. An awkward smile crept up her lips and Seraphina gratefully took his hand. They took a brief moment to check their supplies, the rest of their ammo and made sure they had working weapons. No broken gear or broken guns. Luckily, if their supplies were to run short, they just need a chance to run into the merchant again.
