The secend  principle  holds great weight  because as much as it important to  dictate the pace of the fight with your offense. This will not always be the case  . Not against  a tough  attacker and specially  in a self defense  situation.  So you must  pay attention  calmly and find every chance  to do offense  even when defending. That  is what aggressive  defense   means  as the second  principle.  The most common  example  is  some form of defense  with a counter strike  of some sort. So block ,dodge, parry, hand trap, clinch  and more . Then counter immediately  after  but that is the most basic  idea of aggressive  defense .  There are other forms of that are more advanced.   You  can use a longer strike then the attackers own strike   to get out of defense  position  .  So when they go to throw a strike or move. You can use a push kick, long jab  and much others . You can do the opposite by using  a short close move or strike  to  close the distance  to dispute there own attack.  A short punch ,knee ,elbow,  push  and more.  You can also do the advanced  form which is called  checking  . A example  of a check  can be  raising the knee and shin at the right  moment  when you a kick to the leg  level is coming. Making them take damage  to there own leg. Another  example  is bring  the elbow  down  or bracing it  up  while blocking  and defense  against  a strike to your upper half. Another  advance form is  using parry, block,  or hand fight to stop the move  . Then you use that to distract them from your foot work   that you are doing  to cut  either  cut angle or clear there arms out the way . When you do this . It  gives you  a position  to go the offense  without  threat of their strikes or moves. So even if you use  the most basic  example  of aggressive  defense. The important  purpose  still stands ,  make us of a successful  defense   . Use that defense  in a aggressive  way.
