It was finally dark, and the bonfire started. " Light him up!" Alby said and the keepers threw their torches at the wood in sync. The crowd cheered and Katherine clapped happily. " Gladers! Gladers! Gladers!" The boys chanted with smiles. They all were celebrating the new greenie and having fun. Rick went to sit next the the greenie with Newt. While Katherine was sitting next to Minho.
" Hell of a first day, greenie" Newt looked at the boy. " You made a hell of an entrance" Rick smirked at him. " Here" Newt gave the greenie a liquor that Gally made. " Put some hair on your chest," Newt said to him. The greenie took a sip and then spit it out, making Newt and Rick laugh. " Oh my god! What is that?" The greenie coughed. Newt chuckled and grabbed it from him. " I don't even know. It's Gally's recipe" Newt said to him. Rick turned around at Minho, tuning out the two boys next to him. " Hey, Minho! Make sure that dummy doesn't get drunk again!" Rick yelled at Minho, who only gave him a thumbs out and also received a middle finger from his sister, making the younger boy chuckle.
" You see those guys, there, by the fire?" Newt said pointing at the runners and Katherine. " Those are the runners," Newt said to the greenie. " And that guy in the middle there, that's Minho. He's the keeper of the runners" Newt said and the three boys watched Minho talking with Katherine. " Now, every morning when those doors open, they run the maze, mapping it, memorizing it, trying to find a way out" Newt explained to the greenie. " How long have they been looking? And is Kath also a runner?" The greenie asked. " Three years" Newt answered his first question. " Kath isn't a runner, she's a med-jack and also my sister" Rick then explained to the boy. " And they haven't found anything?" The browned-haired boy asked. " It's a lot easier said than done" Newt smiled. " Listen" Newt raised his hand a little bit and they could hear rumbling from the maze. " Hear that? That's the maze changing" Rick told the greenie. " It changes every night," Newt said and after that, Rick walked away.
" You found anything today?" Katherine asked the Asian boy as she took a sip from Gally's drink. " No. Of course not. And stop drinking that" Minho said, grabbing the jar away from her. The girl only pouted and before she could do anything, the boys started to chant 'greenie.' Katherine and Minho stood up, only to see Gally in the circle with the greenie, they both watched the fight unamused and when the greenie fell hard on his head, Katherine winced. " Hey! Thomas!" The greenie chuckled, finally remembering his name. " I remember my name! I'm Thomas!" Thomas said happily. " Thomas!" Alby shouted and the boys cheered. Katherine only watched with a big smile. " Welcome home, Thomas" Frypan said to the boy. Katherine smiled and she looked at Minho, who was already looking at her. All the cheering was cut off when a griever screeched from the maze, making Katherine flinch a little and Minho put a reassuring hand on her lower back.
